They should have made it where the world was completely normal and the character was the wacky one. Think of Ace Ventura or one of those types of films, the comedy comes from everyone reacting to the main character being a wacky nutjob.
The real problem was the nerd in the film wasn't the same nerd in the series, he was just a guy who made youtube videos, which wasn't the character at all. He should have been over the top in a believable world, rather than the other way round, he got the spotlight stolen from him by literally nobodies.

The film should have been more down to earth, and by that I don't mean it doesn't have to fantastical or silly, you could still do wacky shit with monsters and games coming to life etc, but there should have been less just random shit in front of a green screen all the time, with the military base and the film trying to be big budget. It felt like they bit off more than they could chew.

They should have had it be more contained, stick to the Nerd's house and town, making it a huge road trip was a mistake. They should have focused on the comedy rather than the special effects. I think it would have been funny to see the Nerd in public being autistic and freaking out all the time and seeing people react to it in a realistic fashion would have been good, instead of acting normal in the film.
