I think they could do a Death Note 2.

first, they blame all the murders on mia.
a new kira starts murdering, removing suspicion from light.
evidince points to the new kira as murdering mia.
light and L team up, while light tries to find L's real name.
side story of the special school and other students comes up, filling out L's background.

I never watched the cartoon and I still liked the movie. I don't understand the hate. It was suppose to be campy because of the source material. A book that kills people? Sounds like something Stephen King would make up at a campfire for his kids.
Also all the racism towards the choice of L doesn't help. Why do people even care about some autistic Japanese child who sucks on his finger and solves crimes? The actor who played him did a good job at being as weird as the source character.
