Jack Nance is one of the most depressing deaths because he was the star of Lynch's first feature film and had at least a cameo in everything except The Elephant Man until he died. For him to live long enough for Twin Peaks S3 would have really brought things full circle since it might be Lynch's last project.

I think it was genius the way they went about it by not having Cooper actually return until the finale. Season 3 apparently draws a lot from Ronnie Rocket's concept (Cooper being a retarded baby that requires electricity).

Imagine if he completely reused Ronnie Rocket for Season 3? Imagine Cooper going through the power socket, except the world he comes into is a fucked up industrial dreamscape like in Eraserhead. He goes through a power socket and ends up in a hospital bed and undergoes surgery to become the "perfect man". Meanwhile Gordon Cole / some private investigator tries to get to the bottom of some case involving the electricity, where some mob boss (maybe Philip Jeffries in teapot form) has "reversed" the electricity, hiding in some labyrinth of back alleys. Meanwhile, instead of Dougie Jones, Cooper's surgery makes him a retard that requires periodic shocks of extremely high voltage to regain normal intelligence.

The final episode would be Cooper coming face to face with Philip Jeffries / his doppelganger, who are responsible for the world's degradation into Eraserhead. Fun ensues.

I agree. Season one was fine, but it was predominantly a soap opera with bits of supernatural shit thrown in. Season two goes without saying, but there were moments of saving grace. Three is like the polar opposite of one, it's full blown supernatural with the character drama literally taking a backseat, and all we ever get are random names like Billy or Tina without context. I was expecting this season to be an utter shit pandering to plebs who only have a vague recollection of the original series, but he's really gone to town and I'd imagine they mostly fell off after Part 8. This is a season Lynch has specifically made for himself and the hardcore fans who have delved into the lore and need to make a conscious effort to understand what the fuck is actually happening.

season 1 and 2 are charming but the series evolved with FWWM and then reached the final transformation in season 3.

Lynch doing a subversion of our expectations is what I think is so great about this season.
I think he new doing a season only with a cast of old people wouldn't be so great, so he presented bunch of new ones. An they're great, he even managed to put in a couple of Tarantino parody characters, their actors and their deaths are something out of a Tarantino movie. Can you imagine Lynch in a conversation with Tim Roth creating these characters? Who came up with that idea?
While the old Twin Peaks characters were shown in a way that we could only make sense of what's going on by episode 10 or so, like Dr. Jacoby became Alex Jones and Nadine watching his show.
The directing of this season is so much better it's not even funny, Lynch brings a lot to the show, like the way all the Dougie segments are filmed like a kid's show at first, he gradually goes to a more realistic feel as he introduce the Mitchum brotres and when Cooper finally comes to his senses you don't have that dream like feel anymore, what a ride that segment was.

--season 3 has been great in this regard because it expanded the mythology without autistically explaining everything. We see the nuclear bomb and the creatures invading reality, but we don't know exactly if the bomb opened a portal or what, also if the spirits were able to travel back in time after entering through the blast

I have a question. The good Vedder wrote and sang a song in part 16. The lyrics are about Cooper coming back in part 15 (there is also an hidden message inside, found by one anon here, explicitly stating he's back in part 15).

Yet, the song took place in a possible illusion. (Audrey coma dream). At the same time, a possible Evil Doppleganger of Vedder lurked in these very threads, subverting the lyrics as if they were about Cooper never getting his mind back.

Now, in the real world, Cooper came back in part 15. But then, does it mean that the good vedder is still trapped in audrey's coma? Where is the evil veder now? Will he be back? Could he be the villain in season 4?

Guys! I just had a thought and as I live alone, y'all will have to put up with my random ideas. Forgive me if this thought has already been discussed...

If we look at the breadth of the last 16 episodes, there is an argument to be made that everything has been one large meta-commentary on all of Lynch's works. There are references to his favorite movies, to Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway, Eraserhead, etc. throughout the show so far...keep this in mind.

The key to all of this making sense (I believe) lies in Cole's Monica Bellucci dream. In it she asks "the ancient question": "We are like the dreamer who dreams and then lives in the dream...but who is the dreamer?" Unless someone or something is introduced in the last two episodes, I thinks its fair to say that this HAS to be a reference to either Cooper or Audrey. As theories abound, I've read many that suggests that perhaps everything we've seen in the show is part of a dream...I don't buy this. For one, if either of them are the dreamer, neither would have been able to dream up cell phones, GPS, text messaging, etc. Besides, Lynch, although he loves to play with perspective and time, has never "pulled the rug" from under an audience like that.

With that said, what if the dreamer was somehow making things happen...dreams made manifest. If this is the case, Audrey is the likely choice. She is most connected to the town...what if she is somehow physically creating the madness in the town? Shelly's stereotypical love of bad boys, zombie girl, the rampant sickness, etc...something is off about the whole town. Again, not part of a dream but rather her dreams are making things change/happen in the real world.

Lastly, like I said at the top, all of Lynch's works are represented but one has been somewhat absent until now...
