Why are some people so profoundly incapable of considering perhaps Chibnall's enormously acclaimed, massively successful non-Doctor Who work maybe, JUST MAYBE, played a part in him getting the job.
>>
>>87196978
Literally no one could run /who/ like moff has. For all everyone bitches at him as a head writer, its hard to find a ton of faults with him as a showrunner: he rarely miscasts, he put the show in hd and in theatres, he gets the budget raised all the time, he expanded the international fanbase, he answers the fanmail, he organizes the brand and makes the right production moves(hiring great directors, attracting talent, etc.). Literally the only thing he does wrong is the breaks, and not all of that is even under his control.

>>
>>87197589
2/2 and thats why he chose chibnall: the showrunner can't just be a writer, they have to successfully run a media empire. Very few of the writers were in a position to do that. Certainly not enough that had Chibnall's writing experience. Neil Cross was a good second choice, but he only had two episodes under his belt for the show. Gaiman could easily do it and clearly had the caliber of a writer to take the show in a new direction, but he's Neil Gaiman and has his own shit to do. Gatiss can barely run shit without moffat around, so thats tits up.So the only one who really could handle the job was chibnall.
>>
>>87197710
>implying g_i isn't moffat

Nigga, the first story of shit trips 1 is most of twice upon a time rearranged into something more coherent.

>These six DVDs real ‘hide behind the sofa’ collections bring together episodes of the scariest and most iconic monsters from Doctor Who’s classic and recent series. Each title concentrates on a deadly enemy – The Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarans, The Master, Davros and the Silurians – and features two separate stories from popular incarnations of the Doctor, including Matt Smith, David Tennant, Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee.

>These collections are perfect for younger viewers just discovering the scary delights of fifty years of Doctor Who.

>Stories included are:

>The Master –Terror of the Autons (1971) & The End of Time (2009-10)

>Davros – Genesis of the Daleks (1975) & The Stolen Earth/Journey’s End (2008)

>The Daleks – The Daleks (1963) & Asylum of the Daleks (2012)

>The Cybermen – The Tomb of the Cybermen (1967) & Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel (2006)

>The Sontarans – The Time Warrior (1973) & The Sontaran Stratagem/The Poison Sky (2008)

>The Silurians – The Silurians (1970) & The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood (2010)

Thoughts?
>>
>>87205580
Coulda sworn these have been around for a while Anyhows,

>End of Time instead of Utopia

Terror is a solid pick, Delgado in general is top tier.

Davros in NuWho sucks so there aren't that many choices. Genesis is good though.

>Asylum of The Daleks

At least it's not Daleks Take Manhattan?

Also, putting The Daleks makes sense but it's a bore desu.

Tomb is a classic and the 2 parter is alright. If these are brand new, WEAT/Doctor Falls would be better, though.

Sontarans don't really have any real appearances in NuWho other than that one and the only other classic story choice would be Invasion of Time, but even then it's more Time Lord centric than Sontaran centric.

Silurians is a classic and the only other choice is Warriors of the Deep so it's an obvious choice. The latter two parter is forgettable but not terrible, and the only other real choice was Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, but they don't even show up in the flesh.
>>
>>87205702
They've been around for four years, I just hadn't looked at them before

Would be neat if they included more stories but I imagine there's cost reasons for keeping it just to two. But a proper Classic/NewWho-spanning Master or Dalek set could be neat. You could do Zygons too really - Terror, 50th, S9 2parter.
>>
>>87205751
You mean all stories or really good ones?
>>
>>87205835
Just really good, or defining, ones. All would be a bit overboard, though interesting.

>All would be a bit overboard, though interesting.
Different context, but it's been done before. Including audios.

>>
>>87205580
They're better than the previous monster sets which only included nuwho
Although I'm not interested in these as they'd mess up the 2|Entertain display
>>
>>87205914
I mean having Classic and New together in a bigger boxset as the interesting thing, but I didn't phrase it well. I've got some of the old sets (a Mara one, and I've borrowed the Davros set before, it has a really neat feature where they animate parts of some BF audios with him).

>>87205927
I wonder how a kid would take them as an exposure to Classic Who. I saw Classic before NewWho when I was a kid, but whenever I've tried to introduce people to Classic Who who didn't, I usually fail.

The Tomb of the Cybermen Part 1 (my favourite classic story alongside Inferno) is 50 years old today.

Fuck it's such a good story, and I'm glad it was recovered in 1991 or else we'd just have recons instead (honestly, this makes up for every other missing episode being missing). The atmosphere, the Cybermen, everything is just pure kino.

My main gripe for the covers are the fonts. Only the Master's (and the Cybermen but I've got a problem with that cover) is good, if not for the placement of the "The": it would work better if it was in the center.

The font used for Daleks and Davros would fit better on a gyro place than here. It would benefit with some rounder fonts, like Tw Cen MT.

The font used for the Sontarans and Silurians look tacky. >>87206741 is right, the font for the Sontarans would be better for the Silurians. A better Sontaran font would be something more militaristic and square, not prehistoric and curvy.

And whoever thought the font for C4BERMEN was a good idea should get shot.

>"Grandfather!"

"Listen Susan, please, I've double locked the doors, you can't get in. Now move back child where I can see you. During all the years, I've been taking care of you, you in return have been taking care of me."

>"Grandfather I belong with you!"

"Not any longer Susan! You're still my grandchild, and always will be. But now, you're a woman too. I want you to belong somewhere. To have roots of your own. With David you'll be able to find those roots, and live normally like any woman should do. Believe me my dear, your future lies with David, and not with a silly old buffer like me."

"One day, I shall come back. Yes, I shall come back. Until then, there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties. Just go forward in all your beliefs, and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine. Goodbye Susan. Goodbye my dear...."

Does this make anyone else cry or just me?
>>
>>87208295
I am completely 100% desensitized to it since it got looped on casualwhostream. Not even joking. It used to make me cry. Now it makes me bored and annoyed. I wish it didn't. Oh well.
>>
>>87208295
The Doctor hits on a very sensible solution - dump Susan off with the first man she's attracted to and tell her to make babies. In fact, when the Doctor does lock her out of the TARDIS, his stated reason is that she's a woman now. In other words, it's because she's had a sexual awakening - and earlier in the story she and David have, in the words of Amy Pond, a snog in the shrubbery.

What I want to stress, though, is that this remains enormously problematic. Not just in that the Doctor is basically forcing Susan to marry the first guy she kisses and have babies, but in the staggeringly creepy moment where David tells Susan that staying on Earth with him is finally her chance to have an identity. Yes, this is a callback to a scene a few episodes earlier, but still, it highlights how appallingly powerless Susan is made.

None of this is helped by the staging of the farewell scene. Carole Ann Ford hits it out of the park, showing the producers quite clearly how much they wasted her talents. But William Hartnell, doing his part of the scene on the TARDIS set, feels like he's reading off a teleprompter (Or, as I have just discovered if one wants to be proper, a TelePrompTer brand cueing device). Which, to be fair, he probably was, since fusing two scenes together like this was actually a bit of a technical challenge, but it ends up looking like the Doctor really is eager to get rid of Susan. Which, to be fair, he has seemed to be much of the episode, but it does suck the drama out pretty hard.

The Doctor promises that some day he will return. He never does. One can try to fill in some missing story for this - a couple exist from the Eighth Doctor era - but the fact of the matter is, here Susan is treated like any other companion. Which is to say, she's abandoned. Looking at the Doctor and Susan together, it's tough to explain why. The Doctor so clearly cares deeply about Susan. And he has family reasons to be with her. But he abandons her forever.

Why?

Thanks, I didn't originally plan to make a Class version, but I think I hurt Immigrant's feelings when I said I didn't like Class, so I made it as a sort-of peace-offering.

I really tried to incorporate the logo somewhere in there, but it just wasn't working, so I scrapped it.

The final version (and the early version) was inspired by the Class intro we go on and on and on and on, with the psychedelic colors and effects.

With the final version, I experimented with different filters and levels before finally settling on various hues and saturation levels + blending modes.

If the Brig can get a spinoff novel series, why can't Erimem? Well, maybe because she's an audio-only character who played second fiddle to Peri, but other than that? The books say "From the Universe of Doctor Who", just like the Class ads, but it's nowhere near as connected to Doctor Who as Class, and probably nowhere near as bad. (I haven't read them, but it seems like a pretty good guess.)

Good to see someone else getting into the classic dvd's.

If you want good extras and content, I'd go for that Day of the Daleks DVD, also pick up The War Games for a great batch of extras and great story. City of Death has a nice extra disc too, I'm biased because it's my favourite though. The Five Doctors 25th anniversary edition.

I'm assuming you've got The Beginning box set too which is great. I love those Revisitations special editions too. Hoping they put out another one day with a redo of Earthshock.

Christopher Ecclestone was a terrible Doctor. Every Doctor was the Doctor, he just acts like he is the Doctor. His performance feels fake and sloppy to me. Thank you, I'm glad you liked it!

Yeah, I wanted to make sure it was sort of vague in that regard, so it's ultimately up to the reader whether she stayed with him for a while or not. Any sort of timeline conflicts or whatever else can easily be explained away with Eight's memory issues. (And the final little section was him remembering a little bit of her from back then, but this time as 10, and feeling guilt for how he sort of pushed her away the second time around.)

There was a lovely little line in The Company of Friends, in Benny's story, actually, about how the Doctor always seemed to get distracted and a short trip back home usually ended up taking several weeks at least, and that that was especially true for Eight, so... I felt it was fitting!

It's cheap melodrama in the same vein as "oh no the universe is going to blow up" in Terminus, and the villains are sorely underused and defeated by Sylvester McCoy gurning and doing a shit street magic act. It's a joke and there's no tension. A massive letdown after the quite good Circus stuff

It's natural to sometimes move on from interests, it happens to everyone. Maybe one day something will bring you back to that interest again, or maybe you'll never look back. The nature of this show in particular means that taking breaks for a while is perfectly fine, because you know that it'll be there when you come back. There'll always be new content (unless who is kill) and there'll always be fans, so no matter when you pop back in, you won't be missing out on some bygone era.

Take a break for a while, and see how you feel about it in future. Maybe S11 will bring back your interest - even if not in that series itself, then all the expanded universe things, at least. (I took a break myself for a very long while, and only had a casual, passing interest in the show all that time. Capaldi's era brought back the wonder of it for me, and reminded me why I used to love it so much. Maybe Jodie's era will do the same for you, even if it is a while away yet.)

Alternatively, if you don't want to lose your love of the show, you ought to look into some books or audios or even episodes that you haven't experienced before. There's a huge amount out there, and you might not have even scratched the surface of it just yet.
>>

Maybe it's not that you've gone off Doctor Who altogether, but just that you no longer feel you need to excessively consume it just for the sake of doing so. It sounds like it just might be a bit of a burn-out, really. Most people associate that with consuming a lot of content too quickly, but I figure it can happen just the same even spread over a long period of time. Best thing you can do at the moment is just sit tight and wait for S11 - or, hell, even the Christmas special this year, because I'm sure it'll be a good one. It might just take something new to kick-start your interest again, and the upcoming era will be about as new as new can be, with the showrunner change and all.

Oh, hey, we've got similar travel times for uni - perfect for giving advice! Eight's audios don't actually require any foreknowledge at all, excluding the movie itself, so you're free to jump into those at any time (and if you need any help with ordering them, just let me know!) and you won't be missing out.

There is, however, one audio anthology called The Company of Friends, that covers the stories of a few of Eight's companions from outside the audios - notably, Bernice Summerfield, Fitz Kreiner and Izzy Sinclair. The first two are from books, the third is from the DWM comics. Those audios are the only ones that significantly reference non-audio material, if I can remember correctly. I don't think it's strictly necessary to have consumed said material prior to listening, but I thought it worth a mention.

I am a huge fan of the Eighth Doctor Adventure novels, honestly, so I'm going to unapologetically shill them right here. If you enjoy reading at all, and if you enjoy Eight at all, they're absolutely excellent - and there's a tonne of them to get through. His book companions are utterly wonderful, and none of their adventures so far have managed to disappoint. It's a bit clunky to try and slot both the books and the audios into the one timeline - its a little bit all over the place in terms of that stuff, but you'll quickly learn that that's just the nature of the Eighth Doctor's content in general.

I haven't read a huge amount of the comics so far, but I've enjoyed those I have. A few comic companions also feature in the books - but you don't really need to have read the comics to understand what's going on or who they are, the books explain it well enough.

So, basically: no foreknowledge needed for the audios beyond the movie, but I highly recommend the books (and, if you like, the comics) all the same!

Also, thank you so much! You're gonna make me blush!
>>
>>87218161

Would you recommend I read the books when I'm able and the audios when out and about, or would that detract from both? Just that I'm a bit of a slow reader and I've got a Raymond Chandler shaped massive backlog to get through and of course the incoming wave of uni reading, so I don't really want to wait to read the books before I start on the audios but might dip in where I'm able. As long as you don't get events all mixed up (which you probably won't with the difference in format), then you can easily work through them both at the same time, at your own pace. That's what I'm doing! I've held off on audios for a little while right now, though, because I want to make sure I've got plenty stocked up for when uni starts.

>Also good luck at uni, what is your degree in?
Thank you! I wish you the best of luck yourself. (And I'm studying zoology!)

>>87219035
Oh, it is that easy, pretty much. It's basically just going by release order: Main Range > EDAs (the audio ones) > Dark Eyes > Doom Coalition > Time War. I think that's it, anyway. To be fair, you have to have averyhigh IQ to understand RTD-era Doctor Who. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewers head. There's also the Doctor’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily fromNarodnaya Volyaliterature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to trulyappreciatethe depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike RTD-era Who truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in the Doctor’s existential catchphrase “allons-y,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epicFathers and Sons.I'm smirking right now justimagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Russell T. Davies’ genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how Ipitythem.

And yes, by the way, i DO have a Tenth Doctor tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid

I legitimately wouldn't mind (at least if it was slightly darker). I want them to go for something more classic-style since I'm not fond of the current squarish design.

You know I appreciate Big Finish doing a special offer on some of their Seventh Doctor audio, but I think some of them are rather pointless.

Like, why put a special price on Bang-Bang-A-Boom, Dust Breeding, and The Shadow of the Scourge when they're already pretty inexpensive?
>>
>>87223472
It's still making them 67% cheaper than usuall.
Also, they were the special offers for the first day, maybe they plan on getting more and more interesting as the days go by.
I listened to the first part of The Silurian Candidate today, it was okay.
I'm sensing that the silurian politician might turn out to be a Trump parody though.

Warriors of the Deep is actually a pretty decent Mac Hulke-esque script desu, it's just let down by the production values (a lot like Invasion of the Dinosaurs). Probably one where reading the novelization improves things dramatically.
>>
>>87225871
No, Warriors is not a good script let down by bad production values. It is a shite script let down by even worse production values. You can't have a moral dilemna when one side is irredeemably evil.
>>
>>87225674
The recent-ish one by John Dorney is apparently pretty good.
>>
>>87226364
I listened to it, and it was mediocre. Feels too much like a retread of Paradise Towers.
>>
>>87226972
To be fair, I've not actually listened to it yet myself. I'm just going by reviews I've read.

Personally, I like the idea behind Paradise Towers but I hated it's execution. And it kinda sounds like that particular audio play is for people who think similarly.
>>
>>87226105
It does suffer from cartoonishly evil villains, but it's at least trying to be a Cold War nuclear metaphor on some level, which is a type of ambition most Davison stories don't have - huge chunks of S21 and especially 20 aren't "about" anything, other than the obvious monsters they feature. (Which, to be fair, is a really low bar.)

And there's that one bit where the Doctor falls in the water at the cliffhanger and Turlough just wants to leave him after about 30 seconds, harking back to the amoral character he was in his first few stories. That's neat.
>>
>>87227275
Even that scene is done horribly, with it being framed as Turlough not wanting to bother because he's already drowned, not being amoral as such.
Which is weird considering he'd only been in the water for 5 seconds.

I swear also that Warriors of the Deep is one of the very few times in the whole series that the sets actually do wobble (despite everything that is said about the show as a whole)
>>
>>87227494
>Which is weird considering he'd only been in the water for 5 seconds.
That's why I think he could be lying there, wanting to save his own skin rather than stop and try to fish the Doctor out, and just uses "he's already drowned" as an excuse. (Which isn't actually in the script, as such, it's just a way of trying to make it make more sense.)

I'm probably one of the only people who didn't like Jubilee that much. There were parts I liked, especially Six, but I felt the story got a bit confused at the end, plus I thought the analogy between human and Dalek was a bit too on the nose. Thought 'Dalek' in NuWho was a better version of essentially the same story.
