You can tell it was made by guys who were in the military. Alot of others mostly deal with the story behind one soldier, or have no character development or they're overstylized, over the top with the phony virtuousness.

Not this movie, it gets it spot on. It's one of my favorites. Eventhough it's fictional it's also the most realistic

Stalingrad was good because it captured the hopelessness of war, you felt as if you were sitting there in a frozen foxhole and nothing but another lamb to the slaughter

Dunkirk came close to replicating this but not quite, the lack of characters probably the main issue
>>
>>87167204
it's decent, probably the best war film of the last 10yrs

Not much else captures the horrors of war on a civilian population, it's one of the only films that made me genuinely uncomfortable watching and I don't think it will ever be topped.

I think Das Boot portrays the struggles of a conscripted soldier against forces outside his control the best, and there are many films that have depictions of realistic combat and the effect of it on men and nature e.g. Thin Red Line, Saving Private Ryan, Lone Survivor, Paths of Glory, Platoon, Hamburger Hill etc
>>
this is a pretty nice little thriller

Dunkirk definitely doesn't belong on that list. I liked it well enough, but it was all style and no substance.

It's in the mediocre category, with Enemy at the Gates. Not good enough for the good category (Saving Private Ryan) but definitely not for the shit category (U-571).
>>
>>87168134
The first invasion sequence was pretty cool.
>>
>>87167204
Most theatres still have it in IMAX, don't let yourself miss it you'll hate yourself when you watch it later and realize how kino it is. Honestly Nolans best non-Batman movie, other than maybe memento or the prestige.

Surprised that no one mentions Der Untergang. Not particular a combat movie, but historically I believe it was portrayed very good. My list:
1. Der Untergang
2. Das boot
3. Saving private ryan
4. A bridge too far

A Bridge too far is in the list because my grandmother was in oosterbeek during market garden and I also don't live too far from arnhem.
