I'm willing to bet if they took a slower less aggressive approach and just offered people tech upgrades and advancements in prosthetics they could have coaxed most worlds to their side willingly within 20 years. And then other worlds that originally declined would have joined just to not to be left behind.

The assimilation thing started really slowly, at first they just wanted to perfect themselves, then incorporated tech from other species, and it kinda went downhill from there.

the books get really retarded about Borg origins. there were some aliens with Dr. Manhattan powers. an accident caused one of their cities to go back in time and to the delta quadrant. where the last surviving alien and 2 humans from the Nx02 Columbia were merged. Which created the borg for some reason. Evidently the surviving alien had some sort of insatiable hunger from the time traveling. which motivated the borg created by the alien to want to assimilate everything.

the Q are basically really advanced technology. though still the most powerful being in the galaxy.

these aliens were made up of exotic matter. which gave them the power to rearrange normal matter at will. they didn't need to farm, because they could just will any matter into food.

the only way a borg origin makes sense. is if they were some alien race that was going through an epidemic. so they used nano probes and implants to save them selves. then seeing how well that went. they just everyone of their race cyborgs by default. to make themselves even better than normal. then someone fucked up and suggested connecting everyone's mind to a network. which went wrong and suddenly a hive mind obsessed with making everyone perfect was born. though it can't really progress because it is just buggy medical software at heart.

They just wanted to improve the entire universe and uplift everybody in it until we all reach perfection.

The Borg have no goals or objectives outside of survival. All the actions of the Borg are a means to an end- survive. If it's not cost effective to assimilate an entire species, they just won't bother. They'll assimilate threats to the Borg, or things that are valuable to the Borg, or they'll ignore it. They operate without a single care about anything else, and Star Fleet's initial panic over the Borg was justified. If Borg set their attentions on the Federation exclusively, the Federation would not survive. Instead, the Borg have only committed to small-scale cost-effective actions towards the Federation.

The Borg's only real weakness is cascade failure through the collective, and any time where there is a split in the collective- it can cause Borg to end up competing with Borg and they re-assimilate themselves, which is incredibly costly.

Why? They were aliens, they could just have decided to do that shit because it fit their culture and ethics.
Maybe they had very little sense of self and took slaves since the dawn of time and that just seemed like an easier way to make things work.
