That's where the movie had gone wrong , otherwise it was a good idea. Afterall, Greek philosophy still is the leading knowledge in education and politics.

Prometheus showed us that 2,000 years had gone by since the last attempt by the Engineers to destroy the Earth and the events of the movie.

We are to infer from this that the Engineers experienced a decline in their civilization. Likely from their own black goo causing a Mad Max style apocalypse.

The Engineer survivors huddled in one city on their homeworld having lost all their advanced technical skills.

David came and wiped the stragglers out.

The answer is simple, they didn't have the money to do the homeworld right and they wanted muh Xenos to please the fanboys so they had them wiped out offscreen in a CGI-fest.

I see two possibilities:

1. The humanoids that David slaughtered were another race that the Engineers had seeded but, unlike humans, they were still in contact with. This would explain why the city looked relatively low-tech, except for the thing the ship docked to and why they seemed excited about the ship appearing.

2. There's some as yet unrevealed hierarchy to the Engineer society, and the ones we saw in Prometheus are some kind of elite ruling class while these guys are just the plebs.

Humans were shown to have that knowledge. Not the living Engineers in the 2097(?) flashback in Alien Covenant.

The Engineers we see are living in their last city with their last working space dock. Hoping to find some of their other survivors that retained knowledge of space travel.
