Freindly reminder that people in this very thread are going to watch The Orville and no matter how shite it is, actually pretend that a Seth MacFarlane show is in any way enjoyable, just to take some sort of autistc stand against Discovery.

If Discovery is shite, which its looking like it is, give me fucking neither.

>First officer's log, Stardate 40352.5. It's been a week since the away team and I began our stay on the alien planet. I woke up in a medical facility with no memory of what happened before. They explained to me that they found me unconscious, with injuries which they healed. Now they recommend I stay and get some rest. The other crew members report similar experiences. I'll admit I don't remember why we came here in the first place, but it will come to me.
>Not much is known about this planet. Their culture seems to emphasize leisure and self indulgence. The women rival those on Risa in their beauty, and seem to enjoy taking on a servile role. Indeed they have catered to my every whim since I got here, massaging and bathing me, tending to my uh... sexual needs, and even hand-feeding me every meal as well as snacks in between. There is scarcely a moment like this one where my mouth is not stuffed with delicious food. At first this was embarrassing, but I've come to find it pleasurable and even... intoxicating.
>Today's check-up showed that the injuries have healed and that my body is in good condition, except for one thing. I'll admit I've put on a bit of extra weight, mainly around my stomach. But it's normal to gain a little weight in recovering from an injury, and I can drop it in no time. The bioscan read 110 kg, but that can't be right.
>Though we aren't in much of a rush to return to the Starship... you know the name, the other crew members and I will be back in no time, doing what we uh, used to do there. I'm drawing a blank right now but it will come to me.

So because it "looks better" aesthetically (according to you) that means it's worth watching?

If Family Guy, Ted, The Cleaveland Show, Seth MacFarlances Comedy Cavalcade and A Million Ways To Die In The West weren't big enough red flags for you with regards to The Orville, I don't know what to tell you.

I thoroughly look forward to witnessing the mental gymnastics people will display to justify their watching it every week though.

The Orville looks like Trek in the way that Galaxy Quest looks like Trek.

On the other hand Discovery doesnt look like Trek because Paramount(The Discovery creators) doesnt own the rights to any legacy Trek designs, CBS does.

CBS owns all classic Trek, Paramount owns anything new.

I'm happy to watch STD crash and burn purely because I hate the idea of them retconning TOS with their social justice bullshit ("you can't say the word God." nigger really have you ever watched TOS?) and modern grimdark design aesthetics that have no place in early Trek.
>>
>>87132785
At its worst, STD will be bland and boring generic action schlock.

At its worst, Orville will be unbearable. Completely unfunny and totally cringeworthy in every scene as it desperately tries to pander to the normies who like Family Guy and The Big Bang Theory. Even from the trailers we already know that it's resorting to pee pee poo poo jokes. How much lower can they sink?

People who pretend that Orville will be better are deluding themselves. That or they're cutting off their nose to spite their face. And of course they always have the same defense, "Don't judge Orville by its trailers, it might be different!!!". Well we're all judging STD by its trailers, so I feel justified in doing to do the same for Orville, which might "look" better with physical models and bright sets, but definitely feels a lot worse.
>>
>>87133693

>>
>>87133816
True. Both shows deserve an open minded approach since we've not really seen anything of either. But there are numerous troubling reports surrounding STD, which is a show that is supposed to perpetuate Star Trek's existence. That's a pretty big deal, at least for people who actually enjoy Star Trek. The Orville has no stakes because it's new. So it's a safer bet to go with The Orville, even if people have been Star Trek fans all their lives.

Not him, but The Orville is a fucking Seth MacFarlane comedy.

This is like knowing a chef owner who always prepares food with shit encrusted hands go from restaurant to restaurant creating awful food along the way, but then finding out that he's working in a Chinese place now and happily letting him make you a meal because you love Chinese food. You know he has always had shit encrusted hands, so why assume this will be different?

Nothing MacFarlane has ever done has been funny or worth watching. Putting his brand of humour in a Star Trek skin won't make it any more funny to me, no matter how much I love Trek.

An awful unfunny episode that basically does nothing of note with the cast they assembled. If you're going to gather the cast of TNG, at least tell some decent TNG jokes, not just have the story be "they're all huge children who are annoying".

Indeed. Not only that but they still had Christmas parties on the Enterprise in the TOS era. Kirk specifically mentions meeting some hottie of the week at one in Dagger of the Mind. Trekfags, I never watched the series, but I remember watching one episode on television like 13 or so years ago.
The ship was stuck in some sort of groundhog day, the day kept repeating and they kept getting destroyed by an enemy ship.
In the end they finally managed to send a message trough time or something and escape their destruction.

I fucking loved that episode, can anyone direct me to it? I'd love to watch it again. Ever since I catched that I have a thing for time travel stuff in films/series.

Indeed. Didn't Kirk also say "My god, what have I done" when he destroyed the Enterprise, or words to that effect?

It might fit the Discovery captain to never say "for God's sake" but not as a humanity wide thing.

They've already said that Isaacs was exaggerating and they ARE allowed to say "God" on Discovery. They just want him to stick to the script and not ad-lib.

You can claim that it's a lie or they're backpedaling or whatever, but it's still pointless to argue about now.
>>
>>87135056
Why is it pointless? is the idea that the creators of STD have no idea what the fuck their on about troubling? or maybe something to avoid talking about?
>>
>>87133303
Oh. Heaven forbid you would "watch" the wrong thing! Your tiny but immensely impressionable and malleable brain might either be filled with gooey nougat, or in a worst case scenario, explode and start dribbling out of your goofy looking ears! Either way, you're retarded as fuck.
>>
>>87135146

>>
>>87135117
>is the idea that the creators of STD have no idea what the fuck their on about troubling?
Because it's based on an imaginary scenario where they said something that in real life they actually didn't say.
>>
>>87135056
They're clearly backpedaling likely because everyone other than the person that said it knew it was a stupid fucking line in the sand to draw. The conversation was covered in detail by a writer from EW.

The imposing Captain Gabriel Lorca strides across the Starship Discovery bridge, squinting at the raging battle on the viewscreen, rattling off orders to his crew with rapid precision. There’s a Federation ship under attack by Klingons, and the Discovery is rushing to join their fight. “Lock on the Bird of Prey!” Lorca barks. “Basic pattern Beta 9. Hard to port! Fire at something, for God’s sakes!”

Too late.

The Klingons blast the Discovery. Lorca and his shipmates lurch hard to one side. The high-tech set’s thousands of lights flicker anxiously, conveying the ship’s wounds.

The director halts the action and Lorca, played by British actor Jason Isaacs of Harry Potter fame, steps off the stage. The episode’s writer, Kirsten Beyer, approaches to give a correction on his “for God’s sakes” ad lib.

“Wait, I can’t say ‘God’?” Isaacs asks, amused. “I thought I could say ‘God’ or ‘damn’ but not ‘goddamn.’ ”

Beyer explains that Star Trek is creator Gene Roddenberry’s vision of a science-driven 23rd-century future where religion basically no longer exists.

“How about ‘for f—’s sake’?” he shoots back. “Can I say that?”

“You can say that before you can say ‘God,’ ” she dryly replies.
>>
>>87135183

>>
>>87135542
No you are, really, you don't even know who those people anon mentioned are do you? They were famous for ad-libbing lines, picardo especially
>>
>>87135550
>>87135664
The problem is that you don't know what adlibbing is.
>adlib: speak or perform in public without previously preparing one's words.

As an example,
>The Vulcan salute wasn't originally in the script of "Amok Time", which called for Spock to walk up to T'Pau followed by them simply exchanging brief greetings. Leonard Nimoy thought this might be a good chance to bring something unique to the Vulcan people. When he spoke to the episode's director, Nimoy suggested – citing examples of other gestures conveying greetings, such as handshakes, salutes, and bows – that perhaps Vulcans would greet each other with the Jewish gesture he remembered from his childhood, and the director agreed to try it.
So >>87135379 is wrong to call that an adlib because what appeared on screen was prepared for it and not a spontaneous occurrence.

Within acting,ad lib is an accepted term for anything, particularly words, not included in the script.

Most actors and directors would consider something decided on set by the actor just before filming to be "ad libbed" even if permission was asked.

Basically a mix of the campy 60's Batman with the Tim Burton gothic aesthetic.

It's entertaining in places. Alfred, Penguin, Riddler, Bullock and Bruce are all pretty well cast. Alfred in particular. The "totally not The Joker, honest!" kid is pretty good too.

All in all its a pretty dumb show, but its enjoyable if you don't take it too seriously, and aren't expecting some sort of 10/10 must watch TV, and don't have a case of the "Not muh!" around Batman.

Right, so we both know you pulled that out of your ass. We both know that there are over 700 episodes of Star Trek, with what 12(?) movies now, not including Discovery, with a huge multitude of directors and actors.

What's more likely, that no more than 5 occurrences of ad libbing happened in all of that, or, much more fucking plausibly, that there are many such occurrences.

Have a think about it, yeah?
>>
>>87136690
It never fit the dictionary definition at any point in this conversation. It was always only ad-libbing according to your own imaginary definition. So that's you moving goalposts, not me.

You(r side) also made claims about the EMH that you won't back up. While I was honest about my reason for not looking up 724 examples, you(r side) was very dishonest in >>87135830. Shame on you(r side).

McFarlane said that the trailer for Orville made it look more like a comedy than it actually is. Given his comments, I bet most of the jokes from the first episode were crammed into that trailer. He spoke of it like he didn't have much control over the content of the trailer, it might actually backfire when it doesn't have as much comedy as some people expected.

Hi, this is Steve from Texas.

>Chain of Command but with Janeway in Picard's place

How would she have handled the situation?

So who is this Crinkle Cut Nose motherfucker that's so friendly with Garak? His clothes even look a bit like Vedek robes.

That's a gross oversimplification of what happened though. And saying "2 or 3 episodes" is disingenuous as well, it was more like 5-7 years, which admittedly is pretty fast for large-scale sweeping social change but you're forgetting the reason all this happened in the first place, and it was because Moogi started fucking the Grand Nagus.

If he didn't fall in love with her, nothing would have changed. So in a way this anon >>87140431 is right, that's the power of Moogi's lobe game.

There are famous examples of this in history, like how Helen of Troy was SO special that two city-states tore each other to pieces over here, or how Cleopatra and Marc Antony single-handedly brought down the last vestiges of the 4,000 year old Egyptian empire.

She wasn't crashing markets, she was holding them together. The Nagus was losing his memory and she was running everything for him. When he broke up with her and Quark was trying to help shit was crashing

>>
>>87140561
Like Picard, Janeway would have accepted the assignment without question, and told her crew to man up because she respects the Chain of Command. But Picard/Janeway isn't really the key piece in this, the bridge officers are:

I suspect Chakotay would also accept the orders, far better than Riker did, he's a very honorable man and once he took the role as first officer, he was effectively Starfleet through-and-through, the same as any other. He certainly wouldn't have been bitching about Jellico with his maquis buddies and ignoring orders because they were too hard.

Now, if the Cardassians offered her coffee instead of raw reptile eggs, that's another story...
>>
>>87140820
I'm talking about the time she got in trouble with Brunt: FCA. She was destabilizing markets and they found it was a female doing it, so they freaked. I believe that's how she caught the eye of the Nagus.
>>
>Quark doesn't his position as Zek's personal assistant to take advantage of the crashing economy and get rich

Shit episode, totally destroyed his character because they wanted him to be more like the Federation and betray his people

Discovery will be fucking boring shit we've already seen a million times but now framed around forced political bullshit.
