The original show makes you understand the characters and the plot, but basically all the mythos behind Twin Peaks is established in FWWM.
You don't really *need* to watch FWWM to understand it, but you'll get a better grasp the symbolism if you've watched the movie, because it's referenced plenty of times.

In terms of plot, The Return is fairly straightforward for a Lynch-directed project. The surrealism is there but it has a relevance to the mythos and universe within the show.

CNN are the same people that were criticizing S2 while amazing things were still happen (albeit buried in some poorly constructed subplots), and that came back a decade later to praise the series as one of the most amazing and influential things on television. The only difference is that by now, they should know better - and what we're getting is absolute gold.

The process will repeat in another decade, when television begins to die as a creative medium again.

Yeah, I'm a little disappointed that violence means nothing now, I see a lot of people say that that's the point and fair enough. But I enjoyed it a lot more when it was like back in the show and Fire Walk With Me where we'd have genuinely terrifying and harrowing scenes that were very effective and emotionally draining.

Season 3 has not had that, violence is so abundant that it doesn't really ever shock or surprise you in any way.

This season has been dark, but nothing like pic related, nothing even close to that.
