The movie version of him would be Jack Nicholson's joker. Then they had to tone down the violence so we entered the Silver Age of comics. Now you have the campy, goofy joker pulling pranks and shit. The movie version would be Cesar Romero's joker with Adam West's Batman. Then the bronze age of comics was more psychological and dark. Joker was the opposite of Batman. We already know the joker.
He came from a poor family. Had some typical bully troubles and managed to get by telling jokes to trick the bullies to leave him alone, really not that tragic of a childhood as in the end he was manipulating them. His genius greatly matured and he started to pursue a degree in chemical engineering. However costly family commitments and poor scholarship opportunities forced him to drop that idea, despite significantly advanced high school studies. At some point he married his high school sweet heart. He found work at a major chemical company as a low level worker exposed to hash conditions. Money was tight and thing hard, but his loving wife helped him through it all, their love over came everything. However in a fit of frustration he walked off his job, and lost it. His side job of telling jokes which paid next to nothing was his only real fall back, as everyone said he had a gift for comedy and chemistry. And with his wife pregnant he need money more then ever. The mob heard of his troubles and offered him the mantle of Red Hood to help rob the chemical plant he worked at. In his desperation he agreed it would be a one time deal as he hated the idea of crime. During the meeting he learns that his wife and unborn child died from faulty wiring in the new baby bottle heater, a freak accident. He tries to back out, but after some persuasion by the mob he reluctantly agrees to rob the place. He meets batman and panics, Batman fails as a detective to deduce the Red Hood is not a high threat mastermind and over reacts causing a chain of events that leads the joker to fall into a vat of chemicals. Joker then become a high profile villein who defies all categorization.

Given his plot perfect reactions and mad muttering and stressful breakdowns. One theory has emerged that that one bad day his wife and child died, along with a chemical accident (different day, still 24 hour time frame). He became aware he was in a comic book and mortified that he would be written off like so many of the time. He is driven mad by the stress to keep up his popularity just to stay alive and secretly hopes his wife and child get written back in if he can get his own series. Which has led to a growing creep of meta jokes and more mainstream apeal tactics.

(which personnally I find an intresting concept as meta chaaters like Ambush Bug are fun. But are in direct conflict to the man who just wants to make everyone smile that I grew up with who I found deeply compleing and far more intresting. And really we already have Bat-mite for such a role.)
