This is undoubtedly the worst post 70s movie Scorsese ever made.

The fact that the original is quite good doesn't help it either. Mitchum's performance is so much better than De Niro's cartoonish one.
That movie made me realize that Nick Nolte could have played Donald Rumsfeld.

No, the original is garbage. It's just sleaze, flatly directed by a utility British nobody, with a comically overqualified score. Elmer Bernstein's adjustments aside, they basically remade the film to give the score a nicer neighborhood to live in.
Let's be honest.
Simpsons did it best.
The movie is entertaining but not nearly as satisfying as the original. Are we even supposed to like Nick Nolte in the remake?
There was something electric about this film man. It's probably his most stylized work. And then boom, that like 12 minute scene with the girl. Great stuff.

I first saw this movie back in the very late 90's. I was working 3rd shift for IBM and saw this vhs in the lounge area. It was midnight and I had finished my duties for the night and figured I'd watch this to pass the time.
I laughed my fucking ass off. The rock fight scene between DeNiro and Nolte toward the end had me crying. DeNiro's babbling, facial expressions during that was some of the most hilarious comedy I've ever seen. I consider this film a comedy and nothing more.

Such a cringy way to address him. It's almost like "m'lord".
