Even though the narrative is blatant propaganda, Battle of Sutjeska is the most expensive yugoslavian film ever made because of the ridiculous amount spent on the action set pieces with actual warplanes, tanks being blown up, canons and thousands and thousands of people in the infantry, no CGI whatsoever everything done in camera.
There are some scenes with real planes flying and shooting ridiculously low over actual people while real explosions go off at the same time, it all just seems almost illegal really.

I saw some russian, and a couple of serbian movies.

Brat I and II (Brother) is a russian movie/s worth watching.

From the serbian ones, watch Pretty Village, Pretty Flames (the best warmovie I ever saw), also The Fourth Man and The Trap, are good. I like The Fourth Man better though.

Poor choice of words from me, I meant to say no miniatures no optical tricks no post production compositing, everything was actually done in camera.
But mind you Star Wars was released in 1977, the use of CGI is pretty old.

I would not recommend all those films to everyone, it's hard to appreciate most yugoslavian films if you are not from that region.
Also far too much of the same themes, over the top pathetic "war is bad/we are poor" social dramas and the polar opposites in comedy "we are so poor lmao ustaše and chetniks the same lmao"

The only film I can truly recommend to anyone is "H-8", a top notch well-executed thriller that anyone in the world can appreciate and understand with no previous national context.
Really clever writing too (you have the version with english subtitles on youtube, hard to find elsewhere really)
>>
>>87126355
>the use of CGI is pretty old.
the use of special effects.

CGI is Computer Generated Imagery, the only CGI in the old Star Wars ever used, was in 1977 the rendering of the Deathstar on the screen https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=10&v=yMeSw00n3Ac

yes it was a propaganda film, but it was a great victory for partisans and national spirit. They managed to push through encirclement a huge number of soldiers and wounded men to fight another day.
You have to understand the yugo mentality and situation in ww2, comparing to allies and other participants in the war, we had nothing, partisans were attacked by serbian and croatian nationalist, were fighting against massive german and italian occupation forces by simply implementing hit and run tactics, not to mention till 1943 the allies didn't even consider partisans to be a valid allied force and supplied serbian nationalist (chetniks) with ammo, supplies which went against partisans (unless partisans stole it first).
I remember reading memories of english pilots who landed in bosnia in 1943 to verify who is fighting whom, to be shocked how bad the partisans had it and still fought in the mountains. Don't forget the russkies didn't help the partisans, they crossed into yugoslavia long after most of territory was liberated, Tito disliked Stalin and russian army, there were several incidents during the war from russian side of them behaving like pigs and having to send their officers back or disciplining them on the spot. Don't forget that yugoslavia had battle plans in place after the war in case of a soviet invasion.
All in all, the fighting spirit, history and mentality of yugos is what you need to know for this movie to shine, not to mention they managed to attract big shots from the states, that was thanks to Tito who had relations with hollywood not to mention great love for westerns and war movies and some westerns were filmed in yugoslavia, like Winnetou.

Polan here

Most of acclaimed Polish films are depressing "realistic" depictions of unhappy reality. It's called "Cinema of Moral Anxiety" and its best-known filmmaker is Krzysztof Kieślowski. You can check him out, he's well-known abroad too.

After the 1989 the trend continued and one of the most popular films were still "dark" and "gritty" depictions of life in the early market economy. Poverty, filth, crime etc.

As a child of the free Poland raised on Hollywood blockbusters, I dislike these. So I recommend you a few newer, "art" "off" films. Starting with picrel.

Cont.

A musical set in 1980s (but, surprisingly, no political overtones in the film). Two mermaids go out from the Vistula and become strippers. Film contains a lot of naked scenes of 20-yo actresses. Film is quite "randum" but enjoyable.

Russian Ark seems to never be mentioned anywhere. It's done entirely in one single take from a first person perspective. While that's extremely impressive it's not just a gimmick and there's more to the movie than that.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Ark

>An unnamed narrator wanders through the Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg. The narrator implies that he died in some horrible accident and is a ghost drifting through the palace. In each room, he encounters various real and fictional people from various periods in the city's 300-year history. He is accompanied by "the European", who represents the Marquis de Custine, a 19th-century French traveler. Russian Ark uses the fourth wall device extensively, but repeatedly broken and re-erected. At times the narrator and the companion interact with the other performers, while at other times they pass unnoticed.
