They needed someone who was both a tactical genius, and morally impervious.
They knew destroying the planet was the only way, but they didn't want to destroy the planet and then discover later that they made a huge mistake and there were other ways they hadn't thought of yet.
So they brought in someone who was morally, tactically, and intellectually unbiased. That's also the reason why they didn't tell Ender when his training ended and the actual battle began, because they didn't want to impede his judgement in any way. If there was a solution no one had thought of yet, Ender would find it, and would have no problem carrying it out. He was bred that way.

Well in the book they also created his older sister and his older brother. His brother was fits the bill of what you described, someone morally impervious. Then, his sister who was too emotional and caring. Usually you weren't allowed to have a third child, but they made a special case with Ender and he was a combination of the both. He had the philosophy that you have to know your enemy to destroy them, and to know them is also to love them. The movie also left out like half the book where Ender's brother and sister basically use the internet to cause political tension and eventually take over the world with Ender's brother crowning himself a king, something like a /pol/ fantasy.

The movie was more of a visual companion to the book. I usually hate saying "the book is much better", but in this case it is. There was lots of cool shit that was described in the book, and the movie seems to have just taken the cool shit and made it visual, but it hardly made sense because it left out everyone's motivations.

The aliens they were fighting were a hive mind, and had a queen. When Ender destroys them all he finds an egg that is the last queen. The queen explains that she didn't know that humans were actually living creatures with their own thoughts, she thought she was just fighting another hive mind's drones and deeply regrets what happened. She didn't realize that during the first war, but after that she did and withdrew her forces. The drones weren't going to attack earth anymore, but humans created a weapon and decided to launch a preemptive strike not knowing that the queen had no intention to ever bother humans again. So they disguised the entire thing as a training exercise to "prepare Ender to command forces to defend Earth from another attack", but in reality humans were taking the fight to them and Ender genocided them all unknowlingly, all except for the last one.
