In all honesty it was an incredibly fine line to walk. Think about all the flack Lucas got for the prequel trilogy, how ravenous and defensive fans got over it. He was crucified for TPM. Now all of a sudden young piece of shit TV director JJ has to take over and do the impossible, continue the story? How do you create something that is both new, satisfying to longtime fans and inviting to new ones? Granted he took the safe route basically remaking ANH but pretty much everything about the production itself involved some risk.
All things considered, I'd say he did an OK job.
Also episode IX will unironically be kino, they'll have figured it out by then.
