What do the new scenes add besides worse pacing and tone

a dash of kino, a dollop of taste, and a hint of patrician

When they meet the playmates again down the river it gives you a better look into their psyche and adds to the tone of the movie. That French plantation scene though is absolute trash and enough to ruin the whole movie.
