Is Littlefinger the best example of D&D's incompetence?

He was unironically one of the better characters, who was instrumental to the events that kicked off the whole show. He had a storied past that intertwined with other characters, proved himself very cunning and charming. Had potential to be a scheming big bad, or at least the hand of one. His end-game and motives were never truly clear (post-cat at least) although it seemed as if we'd find out. All of this was then thrown out to resolve the tamest plot line in the whole show, about distrust between the Stark girls which felt contrived from the beginning.

His death doesn't really impact anything because he hadn't done anything of note in like 2 seasons (with the exception of Battle of the Bastards). His death wasn't even a good one, as many others have pointed out, because instead on relying on his cunning or anything to get himself out of the jam, he immediately jumps to "DONT KILL ME". He could have called Bran a liar, demanded help from the knights of the vale, requested the black, or trial by combat. Even if none of them worked, it would have seemed more like Littlefinger then the embarrassment we got.

The books are far more intricate but at the same time a lot of the detail can feel like bloat. There are people who have put together enough speculation to say that approximately 90% of the shit he's written will be relevant at some point in the coming books but it's still a hell of a slog at times.

At the moment it feels like thousands of pages of buildup to something that's never going to satisfy. GRRM seems to be trying to make some kind of point but I can't help but think that a better writer could have done it ten times over by now. He's too caught up in the complexity of his own narrative to just get the damn thing done. There are plenty of better fantasy writers.

Maybe try Gene Wolfe and Algis Budrys, they were kind of like mentors to GRRM (all went to the same writers group, those two were the only old guys there, GRRM was a young hippie at the time, Varys is a homage to a Wolfe character).
