My DM says that they are not and one player says that they are. I would ask in /tg/ but they know nothing about writing.
So basically the campaign went like this: we discover by accident an old temple, discover that there is a sealed portal with dwindling energy, this portal connects with the abyss, in order to revitalise the magic and keep it shut we embark on a mission of collecting 2 pieces of an old great dragon (there were 3 but we only needed 2), we collected the two pieces, closed the portal, the BBEG tried to stop us and he failed.
My DM says that the pieces were plot devices, the player that they were a Macguffins. So what do you think?

They were clearly Macguffin. Also, I don't know how "they were plot devices" goes against the idea of them being Macguffins, since Macguffins ARE plot devices.

He said that Macguffins have to be meaningless like the case in pulp fiction if they are important to the narrative they are not macguffins.
