The black assistant didn't bother me at all because it fits with the idea that Goodman's character is a misfit outcast in his own social environment. The chinese girl however was a total mystery from narrative standpoint because giant monsters are a japanese movie thing, and USA had better relations with Japan than with China at the time. Yeah it's for chinese markets but even they wouldn't be impressed by a literal who with no lines.
