Have you ever taken directing classes? I have. You have to teach the actor how to move in each scene i.e. how to block the scene as well as what kind of expression you want them to show on their face.

A good director will get the best acting on the actor. As we all know, Lucas wasn't that great at directing actors hence why he didn't properly direct Hayden with expressions.

webm related is a blocking example. The director will explain how far he wants the actors to walk and move around when they say their lines so the cameraman will get the best shot of them.

Nikolaj's facial expression have really been on point this season. his reaction to Olena's confession, his realization when the dragon shows up, when Dany tells him there 100,000 walkers, and op's scene, all top notch.

Well short films I've worked on didn't use markings on floor but lot of rehearsals for actors go into practice to get the scene down precisely. You will have storyboards and then sketches on where you want the cameras to be for each shot and where actors will be standing etc.

Speaking of cinematography, I really do like when accidental things happen like in this clip from TFA scene when Kylo Ren lifts up his head and the cameraman wasn't fully ready and so you notice camera pans up a bit late but actually makes the scene feel more realistic and not so artificial.

Remember that the director can alter those tapes if the scene isn't working and the those tapes can't tell the actors when to move, how to move, or anything related to speaking lines.

The Sopranos is one of the few shows that are so well done that it's easy to forget they're acting. Writing, directing, acting, scenery is so well done that most of the scenes feel truly authentic. The characters with a lot of screentime were given so much personality depth that they had a real identity.
