the best american anti war film which is not saying much if you compare it with films like Come and See or Das Boot which far succeed as kino portraits of war.

Sometimes it's a really solid conventional war film brought down by it's threadless Malick-isms, and other times it's a great non-narrative film ruined by the war movie cliches. I'm not sure which I would prefer it be

I personally preferred apocalypse now, though I wouldn't exactly call it a war film, or at least of the same caliber as TRL
