Sam knew all about this. The shit Gilly was reading was LITERALLY WHAT HE JUST TRANSCRIBED.

It only become useful information once Bran told him that Rhaegar had a fucking kid and that kid was Jon. Sam didn't know that at all.

Gilly was merely the vehicle to deliver what Sam considered ultimately useless information to the user by reading it aloud.
