I don't even know what that means... the camera is zoomed in so we can't see the chain but from where he is standing he would have a clear view of it. He even makes a step to get in front of her

OK, but again, chain or not, he should have done something. Who's to say the chain doesn't snap? That it will slack at the last minute? It came within inches, he shouldn't have left that to chance.
