Friendly reminder that it's been confirmed that Eddie Vedder recorded a song that plays during Part 16 of Twin Peaks. It confirms Audrey Horne never gets her mind back. (Pic is an unrelated shot of Special Agent Dale Cooper driving)

The composition of this shot, the lighting, curtains and general atmosphere is so much like the original show, I can't think of a better way to go out before giving us the grand finale.

Also the backwards music was so eerie, something is going on, some metaphysical fuckery.

I got fucking lynched hard by that last shot with Audrey in the mirror.

Booper called called Richard his son so that means at some point he fucked Audrey. I don't even think it had to have been rape because Audrey always wanted to fuck him and he could have done it pretty easily.

So I'm guessing either Boop locked her up or she escaped/was rescued and taken to the white lodge. Does this mean the Billy plotline isn't real? Audrey and the very tall dwarf havent been seen or mentioned by anyone else in the plot suggesting that they're not actually in twin peaks

We don't know yet. But he had so much screentime that I really doubt he's just going to die like that. Plus, he was mentioned by Giant in the first scene of Episode 1.

The problem with your comparison is that for its first three or four years, the showrunners behind Lost insisted that there would be a rational and science-based explanation for all the mysteries on the island. That was a bold-faced lie. The explanations we were given were completely fantastical and, in my humble opinion, kind of stupid. Twin Peaks never lied. There is blatant magical realism in the third episode. Also I just think Lynch is better at it, and it's worth mentioning that the more surreal elements of Lost were clearly heavily inspired by Twin Peaks.

No they didn't, in fact they said the opposite, in the cuse/lindelof podcasts during the season 3 hiatus they put an entire episode towards taking the piss out of the smoke monster=nanobots theory. They repeatedly said they didn't want any "midichlorian" explanations, i.e. unnecesarilt introducing a physical basis for the phenomenon shown in the show. They also repeatedly mocked the idea of a "joop" ending, where joop sits in a swivel chair with a pipe and explains every mystery lecture style.

I remember there was one crack up episode where they read out an explanation about extra dimensional time crystals or something

That's exactly how you mock things unless you're a hack who can't resist winking at the camera every five seconds. True satire requires confidence, in the material and in the audience. Lynch has that mostly by virtue of not giving a single fuck what people think, but he's very good at it.

What do you guys think we're in for with the finale?

This episode had a brisk and almost whimsical pace, everything (aside from Diane) was dreamy and wonderful, everything went the right way, Cooper is a man on a mission, he has his posse with him and everything is looking like it is in order.

Are things going to crumble in the finale? Like are we going metaphysical, given the Audrey scene and the backwards music playing? Or are we going to get a straight shot finale where Cooper comes to town and solves everything?

>this totally out of tone new season

Stop acting as though this is a series that has continually put out a consistent line of seasons, and that this is some sort of transgression against a pre-established doctrine.

Twin Peaks hasn't been around in over 20 years -- even the film was tonally completely removed from the television series. To think that a Twin Peaks revival series would be a comfy, donut-and-coffee infested sitcom parody is totally ridiculous. The show ended on a disturbing, incredibly dark, and macabre tone.

In brilliant fashion, people whining about Twin Peaks having changed are in direct conflict with the theme of the new show - that time changes people, and time changes the world. Evidently, the town of Twin Peaks is now very different from what we remember. Expecting it to be the same is foolish at best and outright inconsiderate to the intelligence of its writers being able to construct a believable world and story.

>When Christian said some people died before and some people died after, he meant the people who were not on the plane like Penny, Ben, etc.
>It doesn't make much sense that Claire would be pregnant in the after life if she didn't die on the plane.
>It's simply that Jack tried to make sense of his death, his brain trying to make purpose and meaning in his final moments.
>It would also explain all the phenomena that is simply inexplicable. The plot holes and mythos. >The Dharma initiative? It's someone trying to make sense of their death.
>People keep saying to rewatch Christian's statements to Jack and hence prove that the island was real. He simply meant Jack's feelings were real, not what took place.
>That's my take on it, but it's ridiculous if you think the wreckage of the plane as the last shots has no meaning. The creators wouldn't let that play during their credits if it held no meaning.
>Otherwise, if the island was in fact real, then that would make the whole show pointless. You can argue all day that the show was about the characters, but then there wouldn't be so much focus on all the phenomena that took place. And that would just prove the much of the show was pointless since a huge percentage of the show is to experience the non character elements. The locations, the 'magic,' the fight of good and evil is simply introspection in your last moments.

Confirmed for being completely full of shit. Also if you were right that'd be a completely idiotic explanation that was guessed by people in the first year of it being on television, so you're btfo either way.

Since it's a double episodes I think there will be a long 'weird' sequence in the lodges and all that stuff but I think this time around Lynch will also try to wrap up as much as he can in Twin Peaks and put a lot of plot resolving stuff in there.

Then again, knowing that there still is a chance he'll make another season - I wouldn't be suprised at all if it's gonna be left very open ended again.

The characters who died were comic relief. They were there to kill Cooper, who has miraculously managed to survive every attempt made on his life while walking around as a vegetable throughout the entire series. The fight starts because they parked their van in front of some guy's driveway and he wants them to move so he can park his car. The scene also includes other comic relief characters cowering in a corner watching all of this happen and then remarking about how Dougie lives in a bad neighborhood.

It's a fucking joke, retard.

It doesn't need to be 'satirical' in order to be effective. Twin Peaks was barely a satirical show. It had a profoundly captivating emotional element to it that only the most retarded coffee-and-donuts idiots could miss.

Insofar as that scene is concerned, it isn't entirely serious. The entire scene escalates because the two people in the van won't move out of the guy's driveway, and they end up in an impromptu gun fight for no reason whatsoever, that the FBI just watch and let take place.

How do you even create such lovable characters in such a short span of time?

Robert Knepper doesn't get enough credit for his performance. I love the look on his face when he's assured by Cooper and Candie that him and his brother have hearts of gold, it's the face of a man who's had his struggles but always done the right thing to the good people in his life.

It is serious, this where all of you are wrong. Its a similar scene to the 119 scene or all the little character subplots, it's introspection. Lynch hates the state of the current America if you hadn't figured it out, I won't go as far as to say it's an anti-gun scene but it's about the ultra violence America has so easily adopted. Like you say, it's about a stupid squabble that ends up in a double murder in a high class suburb. For the brothers (who are also armed) it's not something particularly surprising.

I love how The Return seems to be encapsulating everything Lynch has ever done. It's like it's what he's been building towards for his whole career.

The point of Twin Peaks as a location originally was that rural towns are rife with seedy characters. It, as it is in season 3, is not in contrast to how it originally was in any way.

There might honestly be some truth to that though. I mean, Cooper being in a coma for the first 15 minutes of this episode was obviously a pleb filter.

I'd argue the seediness of the characters has been cranked up to 11 compared to the original series. The original series' characters were pretty bad, but now everyones awful, the entire town. Not just the main characters.

Of course there is.

Remember in FWWM when someone smashed a television with a sledgehammer?

Lynch knows what people are like. He's been trying to make weird movies for decades and he must see all the terrible plebian shit that gets millions and billions of dollars.

That's why I find watching his films so engrossing. They feel like all one big universe. Even Twin Peaks iconic red room was derived from the floor we see in Eraserhead. I love seeing movies and artists or directors that do this shit. Kubrick was another one but sadly he's passed away.

I take what i can get. The series not continuing in the '90s means it will never be whole again. Lynch at least tried to salvage the story and create something nice of it.

There's some important things we need to remember about Audrey's scenes that probably give away what's happening to her but I haven't really figured it out yet.

The massive amount of trees in her and Charlie's house. Trees on the curtains, trees on the lampshades, and wood panels everywhere.

She survived an explosion, which is linked to spirits traveling through the lodges. (Fire, electricity, atom bomb, etc.)

I really want to get to the bottom of this whole effects thing. Everything about this new season is perfect and it's really obvious that Lynch had complete creative control, which can be seen in every single episode. It's unlike anything you'd find in Hollywood movies, but it's also very unusual for art film (his weird incorporation of satire-like elements, sound design, the pacing, the perfect-but-odd combination of serious metaphysical surrealist fuckery and lighthearted comedy, but most of all, the visual effects.)
Like, what the fuck is he trying to do with the whole bad visual effects thing? Sometimes, they are perfectly executed, other times, they are on the level of a 16 year old who's been learning Adobe After Effects for 2 weeks (the Sarah Palmer Scene, Diane in the new episode, the limo ride in the new episode (notice the green around their heads), ...).

Read all the books, the Final Dossier comes out after the finale.

Listen to the soundtracks and feel some shit.

Rewatch the series. I'm sure you've been keeping up with the discussion and catching things you've missed but you may have never actually -felt- the things you've missed. After the finale i'm sure more revelations will be revealed that make everything feel different in retrospect and I'm sure there are even more details other people missed.

Get your friends and family into the show.

Or even just go for a fucking walk and take a look at what's going on around you and how things like nature can look like shots that are taken directly from Twin Peaks including their emotional impact if you just focus. Go people watching and shit.

I don't think it has anything to with budget and is completely on purpose, for instance, the mushroom cloud looked perfect.

I think Lynch loves showing the artificiality of special effects - he's been doing it all his career. for instance with the fake bird in the Blue Velvet ending, where he could so easily have put a real bird in a window for that shot.

How can people still have doubts about this? His complety conscious artistic decision is to make the effects related to the Black Lodge and shit to look exactly as they do. They look great and convey what they want to convey. Thinking that it's "bad CGI" in long scenes such as yesterday's with Diane is like deliberatedly missing the point.
>>
>>86988559
>What is Eraserhead and Blue Velvet
>>
>>86989633
Yeah, it looks completely on purpose to me as well. I've just been wondering about what this purpose is. Exposing the artificiality of special effects, as you put it, seems like a decent theory. If you've perhaps seen Nymphomaniac by Lars von Trier, there is a scene where a movie camera is seen in a mirror (it's in the center of the shot so it's 100% not a mistake) and it seems to be the same statement. Something about the artificiality of cinema as a medium, or any art for that matter. Kinda like leaving big fat brushstrokes on a canvas, instead of going for a hyperrealistic look (for example Rembrandt or Frank Auerbach or Lynch's beloved Francis Bacon).

I think it's an aesthetic statement. But perhaps it's something else entirely. I really hope Lynch gets interviewed about it or mentions it someday.
>>
>>86989945
>>86989871
Perhaps we should treat Twin Peaks: The Return as an important step in aesthetics of the digital.
>>
>>86987858

>>

Lynch started his career as a plastic artist and he still does that. I'm not sure if he's trying to make a particular statement or he just likes the way some particular thing looks. From what he says in interviews, I'd say it's the latter.
