It's difficult to pinpoint exactly why this season feels weaker than its predecessors. I think a big part of the humor of the show comes from defying expectations of how conflicts resolve. Every animated show with an insular format requires a status quo to be maintained so that viewers don't need to have seen previous episodes to understand what's going on. R&M turned this idea on its head by making the characters not better for having experienced their adventures but worse, the salient example being Rick Potion #9. The writers are still maintaining this device in the new season but in doing so they've created a new trope to anticipate which is the subversion of the happy ending. It feels sort of like watching the same magician perform the same stage act again and again: I understand the three acts of the trick so I'm no longer seduced into creating an expectation of how things will play out by "the pledge" so instead I find myself looking at the "the turn" and thinking about how "the prestige" is never going to be the obvious eventuality that they wanted me to anticipate by buying into "the pledge".

The female writers can't write funny jokes so they supplement it with intense gore and violence.

I'm not saying it is, but you can't deny that shows like the Simpsons and KOTH set a precedent for a storytelling formula and gave viewers an expectation of how things would progress which also gave the writers an opportunity to exploit that expectation to great humorous effect. I'm speculating that now that that betrayal of expectations is the norm for the show, we viewers can kinda see around the bend, so to speak.

I'll preface this post by saying I've never seen a full episode of Rick and Morty. I've seen clips online and honestly I don't think it would be for me although I'd be perfectly happy to give it a chance should I find time to do so. I have no hatred for Rick and Morty fans in general; if you enjoy the show and want to talk about it then that's good for you. On a rewatch of Community, it's really obvious, too - Jeff in S1E01 and Jeff in S3E01 are basically the same character - just one is just a tad better person. And character development WILL be thrown out the window if there's a funny joke that he can find.

He's the go-to writer for 'illusion of depth'. People call Community the best written comedy on TV, but it's still a sitcom, where the status quo is king, and getting rid of it is dangerous. Doesn't mean he can't write, though.
