There was a TNG episode that talked about Holodecks and basically compared it to a replicator.

The items inside the Holodeck may not be "real" from the sense they are from our universe naturally, but they can be replicated just like a cup of tea can be replicated from a replicator.

It's just about how they manipulate matter, both making it and destroying it. I thought that was a neat way to put it in perspective. The holodeck is basically one giant replicator.
