kubrick was making his own holocaust movie at the time, he spent years researching and doing all the pre production stuff, he was all set to go, then spielberg came along and finished schindlers list before kubrick began filming. schinder was such a huge hit that he thought it would be difficult to follow it up with his own movie about the same subject. it would probably be similar to what happened with the thin red line and saving private ryan

Kubrick liked it because Speilberg hinted at the MYTH of the Holocaust. No Gas Chambers or the like was ever shown in this Movie about the Jews in Concentration Camps in ww2 Germany. Think about that.
There were scenes were the Jews would speculate and spread rumors amongst each other about tales they heard of how people MIGHT HAVE died on other camps.
Remember that scene were they all were huddled into a mass shower where they thought they were going to be gassed? Then it was literally a communal shower.
Kubrick knew the Holohoax was a fraud. Speilberg even showed this.

Spielberg was tricking the viewer by lampshading some of the true facts of the Holocaust and then leering towards what (((they))) say. Think of the scene where the women leave Auschwitz, we've just been shown it was a real shower room yet the camera lingers on a shot of old people heading into a bunker with sad music playing.
