Also, wasn't "Watari" just a codename and he had a real secret name like L?
And if his name was just Watari then why the fuck would he walk around showing his face and giving away businesscards when he was part of a investigation that even before meeting Light made it clear that Kira killed through names/faces?

What an amazing work of art. This film and its director understand just how dumb the source material is and ramps up the ridiculousness and camp to the next level while forgoing the self-serious nature of the manga. The director wears his B-horror movie influence on his sleeves and is able to perfectly capture the nerdy anti-social loner type characters put to their extremes to the point that you're no longer able to idolize them. Every scene plays out like a microcosm of contemporary American trends in storytelling. This is easily the best comedy film of the year.

>>
>>86944568
The anime is millions times better.

In the movie Light is a pussyslave loser unable to come up with any plan, can't do anything by himself. Ryuk keeps screwing him over, etc.

In the anime both Light and L are infinitely smarter. Light is the real mastermind, not Mia. Mia is actually his slave, not the opposite. Ryuk is Light's greatest friend, and so on.

Just watch the first and second episode, you'll have seen by then. The battle between Light and L through TV in Episode 2 is so godlike and pure unironical kino.
>>
>>86944568

it's almost exactly the same except it takes 26 fucking episodes to drag out and there's like 2 or 3 L's

Retard, the two are completely unrelated. The anime is about a battle between the world's greatest detective and the world's greatest mastermind, this movie is just teen drama.

Regarding the amoutn of Ls in the anime, it's just one. The other two detectives are M (Mello) and N (Near). These are not L by any means, they use completely different techniques and such.

i thought this was retarded too but looking back over it i think they just poorly explained the burn rule....
i think it's that the person who wrote the entry has to be the one to burn it.
which is why in the final scene he specifically writes out that she pulls the page out of the death note and then its burned rather than him doing it himself or just writing that that page drops out and is burned. any other scenario would not nullify his death.

of course the one free backsie burn rule itself is stupid.
and the final destination tier control is also stupid.

>>
>>86943827

oh and you need to pay attention to his keikaku doori narration....there was no "if" because there is no "if"s nor did he expect an "if" to occur, the entire ending was his plan to save his life, kill mia for breaking his ethics code (now realizing she murdered the FBI agents and defacto killed Watari) and gives himself an alibi completely for everyone but L (and his Dad after he figures it out) and gives himself plausible deniability for anything wrong Kira has done (he literally was a good boy the whole film).

also his previous conversations with L seed the concept that theres another Kira or that the Shinigamis can go rogue.

He wanted to test her love.

He wanted to bring her to the wheel and make her not try to steal his note AND convince her to burn it.

In the end he wrote in the note "mia dies after taking the note and ripping the page which ultimately burns". So he sentenced her to death while thinking that meant "IF she decides to take the note she will die".
>>

The part I hated the most was the Keikaku doori at the end. They gave us zero evidence that this version of Light was intelligent enough to pull any of that.

cinematography and sets were nice enough, the movie's much better to look at compared to the Japanese movies and TV show which follow the usual 'film it like a soap opera' convention of modern Japanese entertainment.

Misa, or in this case Mia, is the best she's ever been. She was always one of the worst anime characters of all time, here she gives a shit performance but she's not nearly as annoying.

Willem Dafoe is absolutely perfect for Ryuk.

>the bad
literally everything else. script is a mess. L gives a shit performance and wears a mask and hood the whole goddamn time, Light isn't established as being smart enough, L only discovers who he is through stupid logic leaps unlike the manga version where Light makes several mistakes.

obviously the plot is not something that allows a peaceful ending but Netflix Light makes it pretty clear the whole way throughout that
1) he doesnt kill innocents under any conditions, he was going to use his one page burn to save watari.
2) straight up admits to being Kira and tries to make L realize theyre on the same side
i cant see a Light that does all that as someone who kills L, the name is for proof of victory, proof of moral superiority, or at the very least leverage

>>86949370

"playing for checkmates" in this context is that L still doesnt know the mechanism for killing and has definitive proof that Light is Kira.
and Light wants to make a deal with L because he considers himself truly to be a good guy hero unlike every other adaption of Light which realizes he's a bad guy or at least thinks himself above mortals. Netflix Light mentality is that if L is a good guy and he is a good guy then there is no reason they shouldnt work together.
the reason L doesnt agree (besides plot) is hat like every other L and Near he's only in it for the game.... and in fact in the movie his first trap involves sacrificing criminals like the Lind L Tailor scenario except they're not even in jail on death row so he's the least law abiding L in any adaption (also steals a car and i doubt that gun is legal).

The funny thing is in this version of the story L could get that by literally just saying "don't worry I'll help you out man, explain to me what's going on" during that conversation and Light would spill the beans since he was basically begging him for help anyway.

Why didn't the 'touch the death note to see Shinigamis' thing worked in this faggy version?

Also why didn't Based Mia had a female Shinigami in love with her?

Anon... did you know I was going to post that? Was this all part of your plan?

This. It'd be interesting if Light was either a cop or a priest, so we could focus more on the moral dilemmas of killing criminals.

It'd be interesting if both Light and L were Christians.

i was super baked when i watched it which made it a hilarious experience

watari singing L bedtime nursery rhymes. i mean seriously what the fuck

>Why didn't the 'touch the death note to see Shinigamis' thing worked in this faggy version?
Because then they might have had to give Ryuk more than 5 minutes of screen time.

>Also why didn't Based Mia had a female Shinigami in love with her?
They probably blew most of the budget on Ryuk and couldn't afford to have other shinigami, or show the shinigami realm for that matter.
>>
>>86950277
yeah he's objectively the stupidest L
but thats what happens when you add Near and Mello to his personality
he only cares about winning in the way he wants to win, pretending to be friends with Light (like L actually did) is too impure a way to win so he's confrontational instead.
>>
>>86950426

>>
>>86950218
I was thinking of the execution, not the storyline, silly. Japanese live action is so cheapo and with actors that lack any talent.

This is much superior. It is also what played when L died.

Fucking shit...i actually didn't realise they didn't even once show the Shinigami world.
>>
>>86950478
>pretending to be friends with Light
>pretending
L was actually a friend to Light. He really wished from the bottom of his heart that Light wasn't Kira and by the end he was actively trying to convince himself that Light was innocent.
>>
>>86950299

Was he even doing it on purpose? I don't think it was ever established the default kill method is heart attack, I got the impression the Death Note would just randomly generate a death from the persons surroundings if one wasn't specified.
>>
>tfw we wont have this moment
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpfZF6H8xMs
People mostly hated near but i really light him. Also watch the aesthetic with the chains and L at the end. Anime had so much symbolic stuff.
>>
>>86950565
depends on the version, some L's are lonelier than others.
>>
>>86950595
Well, Ryuk is actively vindictive in the Netflix version, so it's implied with the "dealer's choice" thing that Ryuk gets to pick the method if Light doesn't specify it.
>>
>>86950595
the default heat attack is in the rules of the death note
>>
>>86950565
Seconded.
On the other hand Light...he was a sociopath,he really didnt want friends. It was all a competition for him.
>>
>>86950595
The default death is heart attack, that's in the rules.
>>
>>86950600
Near's problem was that he wasn't interesting and that Mello was far more interesting but ended up just sidelined into a minor villain.

The true problem with the second half wasn't the detectives though, it was Light devolving into a straight up mustache twirling Disney villain. I guess the author wanted to tell a generic "absolute power corrupts absolutely" story but it was just shit, the entire thing that was interesting about Death Note was the cat and mouse between two people who are in a moral grey area.

it was decent considering how low my expectations were, his dad is played by a good actor, at the end of the day it doesn't detract from how good the anime was so why not be open minded

Anime Light is an absolute nutcase. From episode 2 on, his actions aren't supposed to be justifiable.
>>
>>86950565
>>86950661
L's Loneliness starts out as non-existant (or super minute aspect) in the manga and is ramped up in the anime and movies... in the drama he's making all sorts of excuses for Light with how lonely he is (or maybe drama Light is just that good at making friends)

Light's competitiveness is a defining trait in the manga and anime and movies... but it's also clearly plot motivated to create unforced errors which is why it's a trait that's mostly ditched in the drama and Netflix.
>>
>>86950565
Word of God says otherwise. He was lying because he was pissed at Light and wanted to make him feel bad.
>>
>>86951267
Ignoring the TERRIBLE second half of the anime/manga, the only unjustifiable thing he does is sociopathically torture Naomi Misora.
>>
>>86951436
His killing of her is no different than his killing of the FBI agents.
>>
>>86951471
Nah those people were legit out to fuck him up and he killed them normally from a distance.

Naomi he got personally involved in and took pleasure in going WELL OUT OF HIS WAY to torture and use her.
>>
>>86951471

He was killing drug-dealers and burglars. He thought death was an appropriate punishment for *any* crime - and that somehow includes suspecting him of being Kira. He also just plain loved killing people. I'm gonna have to go with Near on this one.
>>
>>86951590
The way L pins Light in 10 minutes on the movie doesn't make sense.

It made sense in the anime, it made sense in the manga, but I can't understand the logic in the movie.

I can't understand how a guy killing people with a note can be detected in like 2 days.
>>
>>86951590

Is it breaking the NAP if you are only killing people who are breaking the NAP by trying to stop you from killing people who already break the NAP by hurting people who don't break the NAP?
>>
>>86951711
He's killed 400 people by that point.
Probably more like 1-2 months.
>>
>>86951711
It doesn't make sense, and the reason for that is that they decided heart attacks were too boring and that they needed Final Destination kills.
>>
>>86951673
Naomi had a personal grudge reason to kill him. that said he totally tortures her and takes pleasure in doing so.

>>86951702
the crime rate went down by 90% across most of the civilized world thanks to him. And yes criminals should just be offed, they contribute nothing and should be as little of a drain on resources as possible.
>>
>>86951702
Only very stupid people - or edgy kids, who are very stupid - defend Light. He was obviously in the wrong.

I shouldn't even need to point that it is very likely more than 5% of Light's actual "criminal" victims were probably innocent. The US' death row has a rate of 4% innocents, and these people underwent millionaire legal procedures to ensure they WERE guilty. I wonder how safe Light's judgment is.
>>
>>86951820
>the crime rate went down by 90% across most of the civilized world thanks to him.
And the entire world was being held hostage by him. Not a fair trade.
>>
>>86951783
No, that wasn't the problem.

Just think about it. They managed to pin Light by simply analyzing the victims. It's as if Light is the ONLY person in the world that would kill these 400 people if he had the chance.

Completely ridiculous. I have no idea how L - who was in Japan - simply tried inserting information specifically on Seattle's police data. Assuming that worked, I have no idea how he put FBI agents to watch over every single cop AND their family. And then, after these FBI agents died, he simply knew Light did it even though there was no indication.

In the anime it makes a lot of sense, since L already knew that Kira was a young, stubborn student from the very beginning. Then he quickly knew in what city Light was.

Light provoked L by showing that he had information from the police. So L put cameras on the HOUSES of each officer. When he had less than 100 suspects he dispatched the FBI agents to find them. And Light killed all of these at once, which was a smart play. It makes much more sense.
>>
>>86951820
>the crime rate went down by 90% across most of the civilized world thanks to him.
Yeah, and the murder rate went up 10,000%. Really makes you wonder.

Retard, I'm a Libertarian, I'm much more "right-wing" than you'll ever dream to be in your pathetic life. I'm also a very traditional conservative, so I'm much more "righteous" than you'll ever dream to be. And Light was unquestionably in the wrong.
>>
>>86951981
>>86952015
just don't commit crimes.
>>
>>86952081
Actually it was more like this

Anime
>L's decoy goes on TV to antagonize Kira
>actually dies
>real L appears but doesn't show his face or name
>doesn't die
>"Kira must need a name and face to kill!"

Movie
>L appears on TV while hiding his face and name
>antagonizes kira
>doesn't die
>"So Kira has conditions he must follow in order to kill..."
>Light's father appears on TV without hiding his face OR name
>antagonizes kira
>doesn't die either
>"Light wouldn't kill his own father, checkmate"

It was still retarded.
>>
>>86952206
Light is himself a criminal.
>>
>>86952255
How does L in the original material pin down Light then?
>>
>>86952270
Like cops are any better.
>>
>>86951820
>the crime rate went down by 90%
I wonder how much it raised once Light died.
>>
>>86952396
L spends the entire anime/manga trying to prove Light is kira but he is never able to do it.

He knows Light is kira because of his personality. L traced Kira's personality and found that Light's personality was the exact same. After meeting him personally, his suspicions were confirmed, but that shit would never fly in a courtroom.
>>
>>86952426
I doubt cops kill as many people as Light.
>>
>>86952455
Indeed, that was the whole point of that suicidal dad gambit later on.
>>
>>86952484
Depends if you count niggers as people.
>mfw there was a fire at Detroit last week
>animals shot at firemen because white people
>>
>>86952430
It probably took a while, at least a year or so, before people realized criminals weren't dying anymore.

I mean I doubt the investigation team would have gone YEP WE SHOT HIM 8 TIMES INSTEAD OF ARRESTING HIM, WE GOT KIRA.
>>
>>86952455
To add to this, L observed the times of deaths and noticed that Kira was probably a student. He observed the victims and concluded that Kira had access to the police's database.

So Light not only had Kira's personality, but also access to the police database and the supposed role of student. It was pretty clear for L that he was Kira.
>>
>>86952255
umm no, im describing the netflix version and it is pretty much what happens, L repeatedly uses an absence of evidence to leap to conclusions.
