Season 1 starts off slow but it's probably the best because of political intrigue in an unapologetically dark and unflattering look at medieval feudalism and subversion of archetypes in typical fantasy. Just stick with it, pay attention, and try to remember the names of characters (some of which you will only ever hear about and never see). Season 1 really sets the stage for why Game of Thrones was ever worth giving a shit about it. The next few seasons ramp up the action and bloodshed if that's what you're looking for, but it would all be meaningless without reading between the lines and really appreciating what's going on.

Season 5 and beyond is when it starts to become hollow schlock whose only saving grace is budget and production values.
