He's not polarizing like Snyder where people love or hate him, but unless the movie is in Spanish, the consensus on his American films is that they're ok. Pacific Rim has a "turn your brain off bro" reputation because of reddit, but there's a lot more subtext than people realize. He's a true visual storyteller like Snyder, though his stories are a lot more emotional and the themes less counter-culture than Snyder's so even if people don't "get" them, they will still usually say it's good.

PTA is the dictionary definition of entry level cinema. He not only steals from better directors, but he does it without any irony like Tarantino.

I am personally fine with it though. Because through PTA, all these freshmen college students will discover Robert Altman, who was the real deal. They will discover Scorsese, the most important American film director of our time, they will discover Kubrick, and the Coen Bros.

Through Altman, they will discover Renoir, through Kubrick, they will discover Ophuls, Scorsese to Fellini. Suddenly they realize PTA was just a child with no original thoughts in his head, that his films just revolve around quoting better directors while adding epic catch phrases like "I drink your milkshake!" and "Pig fuck!" Really there is no bigger clue in to how meaningless his cinema is when the only thing people discuss when mentioning his movies are 'le epic catch phrases, dude!'

You might say great artist steal, but what Picasso meant by this is that great artists are able to understand what works and manipulate it. PTA merely 'mimics'. This is why it is completely obvious who he is mimicking from film to film.

The themes and messages of, say, BvS, are borderline schizophrenic. There is zero consistency at all. One scene lex represents satan, the next he'll represent man, and the one after that hell represent the united states as a whole.

So unless zack is TRYING to say men = the united states = satan, through a character that represents the neutered agency of man as a result of beings more powerful than comprehension allows, which would mean zack is intentionally making total gibberish, there is zero intent behind even a tenth of the imagery in BvS, much less the rest of zack snyder's movies.

The only real distinction between abrams and speilberg is abrams is waxing nostalgic for things everyone has either already seen or are widely available to be seen by anyone with the gumption.

Spielberg was all about reviving pulp comics and shit, things that had all rotted away long before they could be preserved digitally, and he did it in a way that was far superior to the original materials, as they touched him in a way that wasn't exactly intended and he was able to touch others in the same way.

Whereas abrams is just making mindless spectacle from works that intentionally touched people in unexpected ways.
