Alright 24:00 in here's the rewrite:
Light is a preppy kid in a private school who has the note, Mia is an Instagram model they used to be friends but they've started to drift apart because Light is focused on school and Mia just wants to use her looks to get ahead.
Light acquires the Death Note in the same way as in the anime while thinking about how bored he is of his own life.
Light and the dad have the conversation about the man who killed Light's mom but they still don't know who it is.
Light uses the Death Note that night and we have the similar transition wherein a bunch of criminals are shown being killed, primarily those in the United States this is what leads L to assume Kira is in the US.
People begin to whisper about Kira and his cult online is born, Mia is seen wearing a 'Kira' shirt in public and is posted online, Light realizes just how influential he's become through his alter ego.
Same time Light's dad tells him they found out who killed his mom based on DNA evidence/cameras/confession.
Light immediately kills the man, and this draws public attention as Light's dad is actually a police commissioner or something so it makes the news that a man who has killed a police commissioners wife is now dead by Kira, this causes people to say that Kira is an ally of the police and more importantly JUSTICE, Light's dad doesn't feel the same way talks to Light about not being happy about it and that people have a right to due process as it may have been a hit-and-run/ just a mistake and that fleeing the scene was the true crime.
Misa hears about this and contacts Light to express her sympathy and to see how he's doing.

They switched Mi(s)a and Light's characters, so they should have went full on with that. Mi(s)a becomes the new owner and kills Light.
