First time the four great powers of the Quadrant team up, and all they get for it is a bullshit excuse for why everyone is humanoid

Discuss: "Fun episode, terrible conclusion" can be used to describe at least 50% of all Star Trek.

>I guess they needed to have an episode that explained why everyone just looks like humans but with funny foreheads.

It's called convergent evolution. Any civilization is going to need similar humanoid features. First, they need a large cranial capacity which is basically only achievable if you stand upright, since it's easier for the body to cool the brain. Secondly, they'll need hands to use and create tools. They'll also need binocular vision and complex language. These beings will most likely all be carbon based lifeforms. All in all, any species that could create complex civilizations would probably look remarkably similar since they all share the same niche.

>Allegedly the character of Data (Brent Spiner) was inspired by many sources. Roddenberry is said to have felt that Spiner's initial portrayal of the character was too human-like, leaving many viewers confused as to Data's exact nature. One of the suggestions put forward by the writing staff would be for Data to make a short "bleep bloop" noise whenever he confirmed an action or produced a computation. Spiner, however, tended to notably vocalize the sound effect much to the annoyance of other cast members. In addition he would make whirring sound effects when moving or just before responding to a question. Eventually it was decided that limiting Data's vocabulary by avoiding the use of contractions was the best way forward. Spiner's original interpretation of the character would become the basis of his performance as the character Lore.
>>
>>86903091
So was it intentional that they used the same actress for the main Founder and also gave them a similar backstory (changelings were once solid and are big on genetic engineering)?

Starfleet officers are trained to never risk, or even possibly risk the lives of innocents to save their own. This is something Sisko explicitely says to Worf in that episode where he's on trial for blowing up a Klingon transport ship

Neelix was an innocent. If Tuvix really had all of Tuvok in him, he'd know his duty was to give back the two lives he'd stolen in order to be born.

Tuvix was a pretender and no matter how charming he was, he was NOT a Starfleet officer. His death was necessary, proportionate and in-keeping with Starfleet ethics
>>
>>86905780
Tuvix wasn't a Starfleet officer. He was a sentient being who Janeway had killed in order to bring back two of her crew. That's literally all there is to it.

He'd start with pies and cakes, work his way through a half dozen pizzas and tens of bottles of beer, then he'd finish by chewing up old belts and piles of weeds. When he was distended to the point of bursting he'd waddle out and the food would just *poof* disappear from his stomach. This time things didn't go so well.

I haven't to these threads in about a year but I remember a time when even here pedos were sharing their favorite underage-fu's.
Star Trek had a tradition of including children in the fun, and pedophiles really latched onto the prevalence of child actors in sometimes relatively exotic costumes and make up.

On one wall is a "Star Trek" poster with investigators' faces substituted for the Starship Enterprise crew. But even that alludes to a dark fact of their work: All but one of the offenders they have arrested in the last four years was a hard-core Trekkie.

Det. Constable Warren Bulmer slips on a Klingon sash and shield they confiscated in a recent raid. "It has something to do with a fantasy world where mutants and monsters have power and where the usual rules don't apply," Bulmer reflects. "But beyond that, I can't really explain it."

>they'll need hands to use and create tools.

That isn't even true on our own planet. You just need some form of appendage that can manipulate objects. Octopuses (yes, that's the plural of octopus, consult your dictionary) have been observed solving puzzles, using tools, manipulating closed containers, and some intrepid octopuses have even escaped from locked tanks. Also the octopus can survive for short periods of time outside of water despite lacking a skeleton or exoskeleton since their muscle mass is so dense it can withstand the force of gravity pulling down on it. If you took an octopus and gave it forward facing eyes, a complex social structure, and system of communication, you'd have a species capable of starting its own civilization. And it wouldn't be humanoid.

There were dolphins aboard the USS Enterprise-D. Geordi La Forge showed some of them to Par Lenor in 2368. (TNG: "The Perfect Mate")

The Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual indicates that the dolphins were part of the ship's complement, serving as navigational specialists. This would indicate that they are, in fact, a sentient species. They likely operated out of Cetacean Ops.

I never particularly enjoyed the mirror universe stuff, but Mirror Picard would definitely have changed my mint about it, Kirk and Sisko were already too hard-ass to make me feel like their mirrors were different enough to justify it being another universe.

Reminder that there was a 4 year wait between the 2009 movie and Into Darkness (thus killing any goodwill and momentum for the JJ movies) because Bob Orci and Damon Lindelof were arguing over whether to use Khan or not.
Thank god they're not involved in the franchise anymore.

Why does it matter?
Judging by the look of the new series it's gone to shit anyway.
>>
>>86918848
Yep. Discovery will be gloom and doom Niggon war no fun allowed Trek.
Even DS9 had fun, goofy episodes between the dark 'n' edgy.

That's why I'm watching this.

That will be even worse.

Maybe not for you, if you're a fan of shit normie comedy. You probably enjoy The Big Bang Theory too.
>>
>>86919359
MacFarlane already said that the trailer makes it look more like a comedy than it actually is. It's apparently not going to be Galaxy Quest.
>>
>>86919414
If you're going to judge STD by a shitty trailer then I'm going to judge Orville by a shitty trailer. Of the two trailers, Orville looks the shittiest.

I'm withholding judgment about DSC, but even the writers and people involved said it's going to be dark and serious whereas MacFarlane said he wants to make hopeful sci-fi like the original TOS.

Frakes had already moved on to a lucrative directing career. If he had still been pursuing roles, he would have kept more fit.
>>
>>86919771
The other series don't have ST in their name like that tho?

TOS
TNG
DS9
VOY
ENT

sounds like you are just trying to give it a negative name to be quite honest with you family

The name comes from what fans call it, it's established as STD and you're trying to shift away from that because it has negative connotations and you're a marketer.

Please tell me that's just some 4chan shit, because that's literally retarded.
>>
>>86919950
I did always wonder why TOS was called that rather than just ST. I mean if what you're saying is true that the fans name it they're not going to name it TOS since it was the only Trek at the time. The others all make sense except that one.

Maxwell's tactical officer at the time, Miles O'Brien, would later remark that Maxwell appeared to take the loss of his family remarkably well, not missing a single minute of duty. He was fond of a certain song, "The Minstrel Boy," sung by one of his crew, Will Kayden

I'd like this meme more if you would have worked in the McRib. I give it a 7.2/10

Because ST is used to refer to the franchise overall. Therefore, you have to give it a subtitle to distinguish it from the overall franchise.

and that was how I knew Enterprise was shit from the get go. 7 of Boobs was a desperate attempt to get more eyes on a dying show. When you start as you mean to continue...

But Voyager was still the shittier show, because it's responsible for Obama

hasn't all of Seth's live actions stuff been objectively Terrible, or are Trekkies Ted fans?

>>86920000
>I did always wonder why TOS was called that rather than just ST
Because ST applies to all the entries (at the time just TOS, TAS and TNG), and using the full name takes too long on pay-per-minute dial-up which we used to discuss them at the time, maybe you aren't a marketer, but it's STD, and if you don't want to be addressed as such then deal with it.

DSC shows a lot of stuff none of which is Trek related.

And I don't really care if you think I'm a marketer or not.
