>>
The anime was gay, so this is probably gay. We should hang all gays.
>>
>>86902989
Like? This movie just looked terribly even on its own.
I don't think I've seen such a cheap-ass movie in a long time.
Even Defenders looked better and they looked pretty bad.
>>
>>86902989
Neither Light nor L were smart enough for it to be a faithful adaptation.
>>
>>86902989
lots of people who never watched the anime thought the movie was shit
>>
>>86902989
It was just really dumb. The plot completely falls apart if you think about it for 10 seconds. The whole point of this story is to watch a conflict between two genius characters, but this version was written by an idiot.

I thought the cast was actually very good, but they couldn't save this script
>>
>>86902989
Even if you ignore the fact that it's literally nothing like the source material, it was just plain shitty writing.
>Hey girl who I've NEVER had a conversation with before, let me show you that I can kill people by writing their name down!
And my personal favorite
>Girl decides she wants the book for herself, writes his name down
>Her whole master plan was to have him give the book to her, and then burn his name so he lives
>Her plan involves him grabbing the book, with his fucking name still in it, and not burning it to save himself
I mean come the fuck on

I went into watching this reminding myself what it was but it is just bad desu. I don't care that it wasn't faithful to the anime. The acting was some of the cringiest acting I have ever seen, and I have watched a lot of shit television, usually shit tv is fun, but not in this case.

Niggers are subhuman, and it's obviously a token black guy the production company threw in there to appease little racist babby bitches that complain about white people.
>>
>>86904200

Not everyone is white, you should know this.
>>
>>86903149
No, the best part is when she wrote his name in the book, she had the notebook and he DIDN'T KNOW where it was or that she had it at all. She could have just kept it herself, there was no reason for the retarded blackmail plotline
>>
>>86904317
>he has experience
What does that have to do with putting a nigger in a show that doesn't need a nigger?
>not everyone is white
that's interesting, because everyone in the show wasn't black.
>>
There is so much potential in for the death note universe to be developed into a wonderful series. Watari was a good cast and Defoe as Ryuk was very solid. The rest can be replaced. If they got halfway decent writers I would think having a god-book would make clever storylines easy to come by.

All said and done, I like the universe and the movie was everything I expected from Netflix. 6/10
>>
>>86904318
I liked the part where Kira had an LED gun and was standing over a knocked out L and chose not to kill him
>>
>>86904421

If you follow exactly to the anime, everyone would be Japanese. So why put white people into a show that does not need whites. See how it works. Race does not matter if the person is good.

Most people in the show were white. So again the only reason why you care he is black is because of your feelings. Not everyone is a racist like you.
>>
>>86904461
what I think should have happened is they should have made it into a 10 episode series culminating into a 90 minute film where L and Light have a final showdown.
>>
>>86904421
It is very strange that they decided to put a black guy in the role of a character who by the end of the movie:

>grabs a handgun
>steals a copcar
>gets in high speed police chase
>all to pop a cap in some dude's ass

Black L is not good for race relations.
>>
>>86904078
>phenomenal cinematography and visual motifs
haha what?you know cinematography is not just a couple fancy shots right?
>>
>>86904626
>If you follow exactly to the anime, everyone would be Japanese

Everyone may have had Japanese names, but they were all clearly white in the anime.
>>
>>86904078
this, unironically.

If this movie wasn't called "Death Note" I'm sure TV would be praising it for fitting into the synth genre
>>

How to do AMAZING CINEMATOGRAPHY: Put red gels on all your lights. That is all.
>>
>>86904629
The reason the original story was actually enjoyable was the cat-and-mouse between Light and L that actually got you invested. In a movie setting, you don't really develop an appreciation for either of them and Light came off as a retard save his final act and Light's genius came across as flat. Again, nothing I wasn't expecting.
>>
>>86904771

Sure, anime is just white people not Japanese.
Its set in japan, with a Japanese family, but since they have white skin they are white.

This movie was unironically fucking trash. With amazing source material to work with, there's no excuse for this to be as retarded as it is. The best parts of the anime were all scrapped, and we're left with some dumbass high school teen drama with obligatory gore scenes and charmless characters who couldn't plot their way out of a wet paper bag.

One of the best parts of the original is watching some vanilla prep school prodigy descend into megalomania after tasting power. That, and the battle of wits between he and fellow prodigy L. Light is a creepy, manipulative narcissist with a double life in the original, and seeing this whiny high school troublemaker version just makes me mad.

Yes, I know I'm comparing it to the original and blah blah, but even looking at it as seperate from the anime, this movie was still cringe level unwatchable.

Why the fuck can't hollywood manage a decent anime adaptation?

L was pretty decent as an actor. Not top of the line, but he had some emotions, like being kinda scared when he was revealing himself to Light.

Kira on the other hand was just shit acting.

Could we have gotten a better actor rather than nigger L? Probably, but he was far from being the worse part of this movie.
>>
>>86905931
I liked Stanfield, and honestly I thought Nat Wolff was a pretty good choice for Light. The "bullied emo kid" angle could've worked if the writer had followed through with it. Both actors had scenes & moments that showed their potential. The actress playing Mia didn't seem bad either, but Mia was a non-character with no backstory or motivation.

The script was the problem. The characters were inconsistent, their actions were often nonsensical, so the actors look kind of stupid when they're asked to do really stupid things and read stupid lines.
>>
>>86906085

Light wasn't even bullied. He had no motiviations from being a psycho aside from a guy having murdered her mother.

He faced some bullies, but he clearly wasn't being bullied. In fact, he was getting paid for making other's assignments. If people didn't appreciated his help, they wouldn't pay for it.

Light's entire motivation for keeping his murder spree was to fuck a girl.

It was surprisingly okay. I went into it with extremely low expectations and was satisfied with the outcome.

L needed more scenes though to develop his character. If they do a sequel I hope they remedy that.

Why do people keep spreading this gay meme that Netflix L was good or even remotely similar to the source material?

Literally the only similarity is he eats candy and he sits like an autist. Aside from that, his personality couldn't be more different. Nu L is completely flat and bland and displays none of the intellect, eccentricity, or mystery of real L.

The way he sits there and then grabs something really fast (like when he grabs the fork when talking to Light) was retarded and it's exactly like a normie trying way too hard to be "quirky".
>>
>>86907843
Doesn't he give Watari his personal cell phone number too? And he plans to leave him alive. Completely retarded. The "best detective in the world" can't hack into his main suspect's cell phone records? Or monitor Watari's phone after he goes missing? Or just check if he called anyone/received a call from the phone in the hotel before he disappeared and went missing? Any schmuck in any police department could've cracked this case, and we're supposed to buy L as some kind of supergenius.

Fuck it though, every scene in the movie falls apart if you give it any thought. Not just a bad adaptation, it's unbelievably stupid at every turn

I’ve been thinking for a while that if you’re going to do a relatively straight adaptation of Death Note set in the US then Light would have to be white. Because in the original Light is “white”. Now I don’t mean he’s a Caucasian character, I mean that he’s a part of the ethnic majority of his setting. Light isn’t a character that has ever faced nor will ever face any kind of institutionalised racism or prejudice. On the outside at least he’s the epitome of what his country would see as a model citizen who would undoubtably go on to future success and become one of the elite in his society.

I’d say it’s fairly central to his character too since if he had a non privileged perspective he’d likely know from the start that the criminal justice system is far from perfect and disproportionately targets people or certain ethnicities. Which would likely make him unlikely to kill people based entirely on them having being convicted of a crime. His entire operation of mass murdering convicted criminals is based on the idea that the criminal justice system is accurate in its conclusions but far too lenient in its sentencing.

As a weeb, it pissed me off because they didn't get the characters right at all. And I don't just mean turning L into a black guy.

They made Ryuk into a bad guy instead of a neutral observer.
They made Misa into a bad guy instead of a crazy airhead who is hopelessly in love with Light.

And the worst one was Light.
They made Light into a good guy who falls in love with Misa and refuses to kill cops. And he just straight up tells L he's Kira.
He was supposed to be a sociopath who uses Misa for her power in order to kill L. And he's supposed to be fine with killing anyone who stands in his way. It's all part of his god complex. When he first met Misa he already planned to kill her after he was done using her.

And he's supposed to be extremely protective of the secret that he's Kira. He was so good at defending that secret that he almost had L convinced that he wasn't Kira when he killed him. And the moment that his identity as Kira is properly discovered is the moment he dies.

L was surprisingly okay compared to Light. Except for the part where he chases Light with the gun from bladerunner.

Prediction: Light starts off as a whiny cuck that has above average intelligence but is still a normal horny teenage loser. He gradually evolves into a much more manipulative Kira as evidenced by the final scene. The L in this adaptation is a smart detective, but he's not Sherlock Holmes like in the anime. He has know idea what hes gotten into until he finds a page of the Death Note in Light's room. If sequels are made, I suspect Light will be much smarter after the events of the first movie, and L knows Kira is Light. There will still be a chess game, but it will be L trying to gather enough evidence and avenge Watari's death as Light tries to fend L off. In this version, the police might actually support Kira and try to obstruct L. His father didn't exactly seem disappointed.

Then Watari died and suddenly L has an emotional breakdown and is chasing Light through the streets with a gun.

Neither terrible nor amazing. It's an okay movie that's probably worth watching to most people. Though it's definitely very wonky as far as an adaptation goes.

I liked that they tried to make it very different from the source material. Too bad the script was awful and just about all the characters inconsistent as fuck. L was a calculating, calm smart dude and then suddenly a screeching retard. Light was pretty stupid, and then suddenly he created this convoluted mastermind plan that somehow worked at the end. Like what the fuck.

I had to create the best moment of the show on my own. When Light and Mia were fighting over something and Light was all "oh come on, let's watch TV, kill some criminals and have sex like the good old times" I thought "Netflix and kill?" and then laughed at my own joke for 5 minutes straight. And even if he was wrong all he did was write a name on some paper.

I don't believe L writes Light's name though. He seemed like he couldn't go through with it at the end. And L did say he doesn't kill people. He just tells the proper authorities who committed the crime.
>>

Why wasn't based hiro nakamura in more scenes? He should have played light desu

To be fair regarding the guy exploding he was actually hit by big ass swat truck

>>86917950
Maybe this is stupid but I thought Ryuk said that because they were going to reveal Light wrote his dad's name. It made sense to me since he was explaining his plan and his dad was the only one who knew with any credibility (L was discredited). But then it just ended! Fuck cliffhangers!

>The protagonist is in high school, he's really bright but ultimately a teenager in a grounded setting.
That might excuse Light, but it doesn't excuse L though. L is supposed to be the best detective in the world and yet he acts like he is one of the dumbest. If the reason why you let things go is because you "didn't think about it" then maybe that's what's wrong with your point of view? You just don't think about things. You apparently just want a dumb movie.

Honest review from someone with no familiarity whatsoever with the comics or series:

Mia is a non-character with no backstory, no motivation, no apparent existence outside her interactions with Light and the Death Note. Light, or the screenwriter, was extremely careless and it'd be pretty easy for normal cops to find evidence against him, let alone an autistic super-detective who already suspects him. The very stupidest point in this arc was the whole Watari mind-control sequence, which was simultaneously overcomplicated and poorly thought out. Same two descriptors apply to the whole climax scene in the Ferris wheel and Light's explanation afterwards.

It was all just stupid. I know all movies require suspension of disbelief, but this one was just wall-to-wall bullshit, and to me there's no appeal to this story if all of the characters, and the movie itself, are too stupid to root for. Down to the smallest details, it just seemed like the writer and the director didn't give a fuck.

The cast was good, but I felt like they were never really given the chance to meet their potential. L was the best character by far and I would've liked to see more of him. I liked the soundtrack even though I don't feel like it really fits the movie, and it was all slick and fast-paced enough to keep me watching. But it's not a good movie, by any stretch.
>>
>>86918046
Pretty sure Light said a last name when putting Watari in the book. I'll have to check later.
>>
>>86906439
>Why the fuck did they opt for over the top prosthetic makeup for Ryuk? They could've just painted his face and relied on costume for the rest.
Because they probably couldn't afford it. They probably had him perform all of his lines in a day or two.

>>86918033
haha, because I dont dislike and ENTIRE movie because the gore is unrealistic I like dumb movies? Gore doesn't effect anything else, its entirely a visual effect we're talking about. I respect your preference but you dont mine.
>>
>>86917977
That still doesn't make sense though. I've seen the aftermath of plenty of car related deaths and they usually don't end up as a pulpy mess. I also really doubt the way that ladder came at Kenny that his head would have just come off like that.
>>
>>86918094
>haha, because I dont dislike and ENTIRE movie because the gore is unrealistic I like dumb movies?
Oh, I get it now. English isn't your first language and that's why you're okay with the movie. When people don't really understand what is being said or the logic in a film they, like you, tend to reason their like or dislike based purely off the visual aspects.

But I didn't just call the gore dumb. I said that L was an idiot and he shouldn't be.

>>
>>86918172
Yet your specific comment towards me was based on my comment about the gore, so thats what I responded to. You insinuated that because I didnt pay attention to the gore, I dont pay attention to other aspects and want the film to be dumb. That is dumb, I was just trying to discuss it and it always has to turn into some kind of contest with you people, insulting the other until someone's opinion is "right"
>>
>>86918242
It's not like Saw. It doesn't use the gore as a crutch. I don't find it to be dumb either. So let's agree to disagree.
>>
>>86918264
>Yet your specific comment towards me was based on my comment about the gore
It didn't sound like you were talking about gore. The way you worded it mad it sound like you were okay with the way it was dumb in general, including the editing, writing, and plot as well as the gore.

He didn't really do much except hang around and be creepy, though. I was honestly expecting the whole time that there'd be a "twist" where he fucks Light over in the end, but nothing happened. Even if you choose to read it that Light dies in the end, that was L's doing, not Ryuk's To me, he really didn't seem that important to the story.

>>
>>86918309
Here's the way I see it. When there's too much gore in a film it makes death feel cheap. It "lessens" the impact. It felt that they focused on the wrong aspects of the Death Note making it about showing off the deaths than it was a high stakes cat and mouse game where each Death was impactful. I've got some experience in editing and making films and I would have handled death differently. I would have made the blood and gusts very minimal, maybe at times not even showing the deaths. This leaves them more to the imagination and heightens the tension, and I would focus more on how the deaths affects others.
>>
>>86910008
Is that a rule in the original death note? Cause now Im wondering why Raito just didnt use someone on the investigation team to do it

I guess you're right about that. But I'm not talking about the roles of Ryuk in the film. I'm talking about Willam dafoes ability to act like Ryuk, which I thought was pretty good. What's wrong with Ryuk isn't the actor. It's the writing.

I wonder why Ryuk decided to give the Death Note to Light in the first place?

I'm not mad because things were different from the anime. Hell, I would have liked to see some interesting twists from what the anime did.

But almost all the changes are legitimately less interesting than the source material. The original was about a high school/college student with sociopathic tendencies and a god complex. and his mindgames with one of the world's top detectives who is also fucking crazy himself. The TV adaptation made it a subpar teen romance with the main conflict being between a bullied high school student and his crazy girlfriend.

Now, I will admit that having not!Misa being a psychotic bitch who's manipulating him is an interesting change, but it's just not enough with every other less interesting change the movie makes. Especially when it tries to make Light more sympathetic when he's much more interesting as a psychopath who cuts down anyone who gets in his way. Maybe if she gradually pulled him into being a fucking psychopath, but it's blatantly played off as not!Misa being the psychopath, while Light's ruthlessness is vastly tone down.

And oh my god, fucking Ryuk. I loved Dafoe's performance, but he was so much more interesting as a passive observer than an active force.
>>
>>86914823
It's has nothing to do with his """""smooth"""" face faggot. It's his stupid grin and he just seems like a smug Jew.
>>
>>86918768
But Ryuk was a passive Force. Think about it. What did Ryuk ever do? All he did was give Light the notebook and follow the instructions in taking down the Ferris wheel. In every other way Ryuk just does nothing.
>>
>>86918975
This Ryuk gives Light the Death Note, forces him into killing, and threatens him whenever he wants to drop out of it.

>>86919516
I'm actually pretty confidant the seven-day rule is a load of horseshit Ryuk made up just to make sure Light doesn't pussy out of things and keeps using the Note
In the manga, Light had Ryuk feed the investigation team a bullshit rule that "If the user doesn't use this Note for 13 days, he dies of a heart attack" so he can lay low for a while and get the heat off of him
>>
>>86919901
I thought black L was fine.
His characterization was fucking retarded though. L never lost his cool like that in the anime.
>>

You ever notice that somebody definitely did right Ryuk's name in the Death Note? The warning that said to not trust Ryuk? But Ryuk said nobody managed to right his name in it.

>>
>>86920070
That screenshot has nothing to do with writing Ryuk's name. Also, it doesn't matter if someone is "trying" to kill him. A name written inside dies which is why it's important not to accidentally kill someone.
>>
>>86920100
Gee, can a death god tell when someone's actually using his death note or not to kill someone

>>86920116
You don't know a goddamn thing about the movie, do you? Have you fucking watched it? What a mindless retard
You have to visualize a person's face to kill them to prevent accidentally killing the wrong person. Whoever wrote the warning didn't picture his face, and therefore Ryuk didn't die when his name was written in the Note.
It entirely matters if someone is trying to kill him.
>>
>>86920246
>Whoever wrote the warning didn't picture his face, and therefore Ryuk didn't die when his name was written in the Note.
Are you stupid or something? Whoever wrote that had to have been someone who personally knows Ryuk, so it's impossible for them to not visualize what Ryuk looks like while writing his name and giving a warning about him.
