It would need a lot of changing. There's not much of a story there and the characters are typical Clarkean professionals.

I guess it could be kino if the movie ends with everyone leaving and just letting Rama go, knowing that it's a mystery that they will never know the answer to.

Like the other guy said, Nolan could do it, even if he's a meme director.
If Blompkamp ever comes back to Hollywood he could do it too, if he could manage not shoving in politics

Hand it off to a competent network and rework it to be a little more mature and gritty (but not edgy).

Keep it set in the Pacific Northwest of the 90s.

I respectfully disagree.
The story is about the wonders in progression: first the discovery, then the dark environment, the lights on, the arrival of the bots, their explorations, the adventures in the sea and in the south pole.
There is plenty for a movie.
What is definitely avoidable is the genetically modified apes and stories about double wives, for a variety of reasons.
But they add nothing to the story.

Reading Slaughterhouse 5 for the first time a few weeks ago I was struck by the thought "this is impossible to film." Every couple of paragraphs jumps to a different time period. I tried to see it in my head, but the movie would have to be 5 hours.

On the plus side, I think it gave me a better appreciation of what books can do that movies can't.

>>86916345
Same. They must be really scared about that abortive Black Cauldron disney cartoon. Or, more likely, the execs say "Lloyd who?" Given how the Narnia movies turned out (and the Hobbit), I would be happy to see no one touch this series.

That being said, thinking of fantasy, I remember reading this back in high school thinking how insane a movie it would make. This might be the most deliriously out-there fantasy novel I've read, but for the "normal" reasons. It is just this ridiculous progression of one-upmanship from the most masculine dudes in all the kingdom. An early highlight being one of the dudes telling a sorceress "I'll prove to you that your spells can't hurt me!" and he does it by fucking her. This was written in like the 30s, mind you.

But Children of the Mind goes a little off the deep end.

>>

Going back and breaking down the events of just Ender's Game chapter by chapter with /tv/ a few months ago was fucking hilarious enough, never mind the sequels
There's something really impressive about what Card can sell you as you're reading admittedly. When you're into the book you never once stop and think 'Did these two genius super children, one of which is pointlessly, comically evil and the other retardedly kind just use internet debates to make themselves world leaders?' or 'Did that talking pig alien just die and turn into a tree?' It's when you go back and look at each event in isolation you realise how much batshit nonsense you just read
>>
>>86919644
Peter wasn't comically evil
You missed the entire point

Peter and Valentine were just two different means of control.
Violence and love.
It was through Ender we saw the enactment of both kinds of control.
>>
>>86919733
OK but he did become president of Earth by having the best internet arguments
>>
>>86919872
No, he became Hegemon because Valentine had the best "Internet" arguments

And it's understating the point to call them "internet" arguments
They were the equivalent of voting and town house meetings.
It was government shit they were shitposting on.
Not a Laosian bone carving symposium
>>
>>86919644
>'Did these two genius super children, one of which is pointlessly, comically evil and the other retardedly kind just use internet debates to make themselves world leaders?'

Literally unfilmable
I love Hyperion so very much.
The first book is absolutely amazing.
The Canterbury Tales narrative is truly kino
It loses a bit when it goes full space opera, but it's a good series.

But the budget required to show so many different worlds... Unless in 20 years we have full photo-real CGI, it ain't happening.

Dan Simmons is really good when he's on top of his game.
>>
>>86920422
I like both a lot, but I think people underestimate Ender's Game because of the child protagonist.
It's ultimately about violence.
It's an agreeing response to Starship Troopers.
Violence is the vehicle from which we derive all authority. Ender's Game takes it one stage further and says that violence is the means in which we derive all life.

Speaker is about how violence and death aren't so bad after all.
The other two books kinda fall apart and say violence is bad and goes into souls and shit.
>>
>>86920390
>>86920455
Like with Dune there's too much for a movie but the first book is perfect for a maybe 10 episode series with a pretty decent budget
Problem being after GoT, TWD etc. everybody wants a guaranteed franchise so when you present them with something that A. is not a franchise and B. is not guaranteed you're shit out of luck

Sirens is a linear story.

I think a really great director could adapt it today.

I have no idea what that is but the point being, Hollywood is clearly incapable of actually _adapting_ a novel or book series anymore, everything get mangled and homogenized by the studio/network marketing dept. to appeal to the widest market (i.e. lowest common denominator) and is turned into garbage as a result.

If you’ve read The Godfather or Shogun, you’ll know what I’m talking about; both the movies and mini-series followed the original story with very few deviations but nowadays, that’s just not the case, as the executives aren’t there long enough to care and need to “make their mark” by changing the story but if they had any actual talent, they’d be actual writers and not Hollywood hack producers.

Odds are, GRRM’s contract stipulates he can’t talk shit about the shitty tv series but I think HBO just kept upping the money until he couldn’t refuse and I guess I can kinda understand.

He was already older by the time GoT became a hit book series and while the guy made a living as an author, you can see from his regular suburban house that he wasn’t rolling in money, so might as well live it up for the time you’ve got left.

Still, he could have insisted on some level of authorial control, as Kirkman did with The Walking Dead (which is still shit but at least he’s got a say in the matter).

Yeah it's difficult, isn't it...i've written a sci-fi tv show pilot, and i don't even know if it's worth sending it. Even if they accept it, they might change it completely.
Might transform it into a book and see if it helps.

not amazingly written, but that premise is fucking tasty and would be great potential for visual kino with the dimension shifting

Not that I know anything about it at all, but I’d think that have a published book gives the author far more leverage with a studio/network then just shilling a script.

Creative control = money.

Hollywood gets a bazillion scripts per day and odds are good that even if they pick up OP’s script, they’ll pay him jack shit for it and if he holds out for more money, they’ll just change some story elements around and produce it anyways, completely screwing him out of any money.

Id say it's impossible. It only works because it's a book. They could try and do like a TV series that's an analog to it but it would never capture the same pacing and feeling. I'd like to see someone smart take a stab at it though.

Only if you have sold decent numbers, published by a big publishing house or have a fan base. Anyone can get a book published by some nobody publisher.

More like Pynchon-lite. It jumps around the pov of half-dozen characters as they get involved in every conspiracy-theory known to man (as far as the cold war era goes). Fun stuff.

OLD MAN'S WAR was originally supposed to be a movie at Paramount but they had issues with the whole "green photosynthesizing people" thing and let the option slip. now it'll be a TV series over at SyFy and they'll actually adapt all the books in the series.

they are currently filming CITY AND THE CITY for the BBC. I'm curious as hell how they intend to pull this one off. I'd have considered it unfilmable.

did you forget that the judge is also a white male? of course all he does is rape and murder those that are weaker than him and is, possibly, quite literally Satan.

These books are legit some of the best sci-fi out there. I think many people don't give them the credit they deserve because they are often seen as children's books. Also Card wrote some really, really bad garbage later, which makes me worried about the final book that will wrap up the Ender and Shadow saga.

Can't wait for the ants to get BTFO, the queens are evil, always have been, always will be.
>hmmm, these space ships and complex structures must be natural, since there's no communication we can sense, let's destroy it all without further investigation
>hmm what do you mean mind raping workers into submission and letting those who can resist slowly starve to death is bad, I think you're being specicist, or worse, a communist

Good riddance.

>In February 2014, Deadline.com reported that Marc Forster had been selected to direct a film adaptation of the book, with Joe Roth, Palak Patel and Renee Wolf producing and author Brown writing the screenplay.[9] A subsequent article reported that Universal Pictures outbid Sony Pictures for screen rights in a seven-figure deal.[10] As of February 2016, the film was still in development, with Brown having written the first two drafts.[11] Brown said in March 2016, "I have written the first two drafts of the film and now we're on the third. Hopefully it will be greenlit this year. The vision from the film makers is 'Lawrence of Arabia in space', which is terribly exciting for me as it's my favorite film."[8]
