>>

Pretty sure the guy lived way more in that short amount of time in the wilderness than you've ever done in those pathetic 30 years of your worthless life.

Well at least you've got your memes, right?
>>
>>86893072
Before this thread gets going:

the "magic bus" is not near a main road

there was a tram that he could have used to cross the river but it was not near the bus, it was somewhat close to the area where he had crossed the river months before.

even if he had a map, it's unlikely that said tram was marked on it.
>>
>>86893610
>fuck society man i'm an animal brah
>awww shit you need other humans to survive in the wild because humans are social animals and society is an instinct.
Admittedly I haven't seen the movie, am I close?
>>
>>86893805
Yeah dying alone and afraid in the middle of a forest a few hundred yards from the means of escape sure sounds like a great life
>>
>>86893864
see >>86893809
>>
>>86893072

Turns out his father beat the living shit out of him and terrorized the rest of his family, so yeah. Yet Krakauer felt leaving that fact which happens to explain everything out of his book was somehow protecting the familiy's privacy.
>>
>>86893809
How did the magic bus get there?
>>
>>86893072
>didn't bring a map because he wanted a mysterious adventure experience
>there was a trolley/pulley bridge just a few kilometers from his camp
>had he just brought a map and only looked at it for emergencies, he would have known about the bridge and not starved to death

he's a fucking idiot

the story is mildly interesting, though
>>
>>86894046
I believe it was towed there. The area it's in used to be a worksite for loggers or something like that.
>>
>>86894102
Again, see >>86893809. It's an extremely common misconception that the river crossing was close to the bus.
>>
>>86893072
The guy basically committed suicide. He just wanted to escape a shitty life.
See >>86894045
The way the turned his story to magic hippie adventure is even sadder, because in the movie he's just a dumb fuck who thought living with just nature was cool, and nature ended up killing him because it turns out you have to be knowledgeable and shit to live that life.
>>
>>86894045
For anyone that's curious, the allegations of child abuse come from a book that Chris' sister wrote several years later.
>>
the guy had a nice idea but was totally unprepared.
do it for a week and see how you get on, leaping head first into nature is stupid
>>
>>86894160
Yeah man, nice citations. I readily believe your random post over everyone else's because you just sound so smart and knowledgeable
>>
>>86894431
Whatever retard. Look it up for yourself then. The tram crossing is close to where Chris initially crossed the river in April, several miles from the site of the bus.

Let's pretend his passion was Nascar driving...

Christopher McCandless sets off, from California in an old car he rebuilt himself (he replaced the fenders and painted it), on a trip to the Daytona 500. He only gets across the state line when he runs out of fuel because he forgot to fill it up. Instead of simply walking to the nearest gas station or flagging down help he decides to push his car over an embankment and set it on fire. He then proceeds to walk on foot to the nearest car lot (which happens to be in Mexico for some reason, mostly because he burned up his map in the car and he's been taking backroads.) He finds an old bicycle in a garbage dump and uses that.

He finally gets to the car lot and buys a fixer-upper for $50. Before leaving the car lot he has to change a tire, which he replaces with the solid rubber donut. He buys fuel and heads off to the Daytona 500 again. Only he's heading deeper into Mexico and eventually ends up broken down in front of, "Autodromo Internacional de la Jolla" due to no water in the radiator. The engine block has seized up. Luckily, there's a race about to start. Christopher...er "Alexander Superspeeder", who changed his name, pays the $125 entry fee for the race.

Unfortunately, Alexander Superspeeder doesn't have a race car. He does however have an old bicycle still. He uses the bicycle to race. He makes it only 3 laps before he is too tired to steer straight and veers off into a race car and is killed.

Some Jew picks up his story and writes a book about his life and how he followed his dreams. Another Jew makes a movie about it. Armchair racers around the world adore him.

The End.

A lot of this pasta isn't true. He didn't shun society at all. He worked odd jobs including Burger King to save money for the Alaska trip. He also didn't actually burn his wallet and identification. They were later found in his backpack.

>He didn't shun society at all.

I don't know why they tried to portray a mentally ill young adult who should have been referred for treatment as a totally sane lost young soul hippie who was completely rational and well meaning but unprepared in the movie and book.

I have no idea why people admire him. Half the people he took advantage of in the film are the kind of people who would have LOVED the life he left behind because they know how shitty it is to be poor.

He was a spoiled rich kid with mental problems who rebelled in the most selfish way possible against nothing.

>He on the other hand went to Alaska to outright die

I highly, highly doubt the theory that he was depressed and suicidal. First of all, he was in Alaska during the summer. That particular area gets highs in the 70s and lows in the 40s in the summer months so it's not really that bad. Second, he seemingly just had this romantic notion about living off the land which is really what doomed him. If he had brought ample food supplies with him, it would have just been a pleasant summer vacation.

>poisons himself by eating the wrong berries

He died from starvation not berry eating. Most of the stuff in the movie was altered to make him seem better, even though the character is retarded. For instance, the book in the movie which shows the plants, has the page edited to remove the warning about eating the seeds from that plant. Also, you need to literally eat a cow's worth of diet in those seeds in order to have problems with them. You'd end up sick and vomiting from the normal compounds that are in all plants before it would ever affect you.

>>86895295
He seemed fine, it was the lack of water at the dried up spring that shows he flawed thinking. When I go out, I bring more water than I need in order to reach a new source of water. That way I can still make it back to where ever the last water source is before running out. I've only had to do that once and I was glad I thought that far ahead. Not doing that is a common thing for many people. They always seem to say the same thing, "but that's way more water than we need to reach the next spot. Its just too heavy!" and they don't bring the extra water. Sometimes it turns out very poorly for them. Chris on the other hand was losing weight constantly and still didn't come back. It was very obvious he couldn't sustain his body mass for several months.

Thus, Chris was far far dumber than Evan.

>>86895604
>>86895714
He had the map still and it did have the tram marked. Also, the crossing is just a short distance from the bus.
>>
>>86895803
Oh the map didn't have the tram on it? Kind of an oversight if it's an official map.
>>
>>86895803
>Also, the crossing is just a short distance from the bus.

Not that short. IIRC the bus is about 10 miles from the river. That's a pretty far distance if you're weak and starving.

>Krakaur is a fucking self inserting hack.

This x1000
>>
>>86895868
Weak and starving? Oh yeah, but that takes a long long long time to occur and you have plenty of time to notice it before you are too weak to do anything about it.
>>
>>86895416
Dude asked about the movie, not the book.
>>
>>86893072
He was a failure of being unwilling to read up on survival, in the end. He just never talked about anything to anyone and privately seethed at everything he didn't perfectly like or understand. Also in his letters to his sister he says 'I bet they think I'm gay or something!' about his parents then totally blows up about his guess. He honestly seemed kind of schizophrenic, but definitely willing to humor and take very seriously any little thing he could think of. He was definitely a conspiracy-type guy who really projected anger onto anything for any reason.
>>
>55 posts and no webm of prime K Stew

>>86893842
Nah, it's a true story where a high school grad leaves society to solo backpack across the country while writing angry manifesto letters about how his parents and anyone you don't meet in the woods are deranged psycho brainwashers who can never understand him, then he freezes to death because he doesn't know anything.

Possibly. Main issue was that he didn't really research what he was doing. Part of being human is the ability to learn and prep for things, he should have spent a few years really studying the outdoors and survival, he would've been fine innawoods.

People who hate him hate him because he completely rejected normal culture. He hated money, hated status climbing, hated social posturing, and hated working. Though familiar to NEET life on the surface, this is actually the opposite. The NEET wants these things, and cannot have them. Every basementdwelling fuck would surround his pale, maggoty body with women if he could, but he never can. The indignant anger they feel toward McCandless is the same as that of normies who go "dude what a retard who even dies going camping lmao" but tainted with additional bitterness because McCandless had the life they wanted, their IDEAL, and pushed it away because it was hollow and not worth living.

Everyone gets tired of the quest for money and success and other bullshit that society forces on you and makes you think it's important. But then we get over it and go back to our boring life of never having enough stuff.

McCandless got stuck on being tired of society so he left it completely. And he fucking starved to death in an abandoned bus in the woods just like every person that leaves society should.

>>
>>86900955
That's an easy thing to believe, since Krakauer wrote his book to be about that, but even in the book Krakauer had a rage and feelings of betrayal regarding his parents and everything he had tried to be a part of. People arent merely frustrated McCandless out of jealousy, but also because his story helps people to realize they have far more connections than they think.
Though it's clear McCandless didn't have zero affection for his family and modern living, he cut himself loose in a state of anger. He could have gone either way but he made a very harsh decision for independence. Good for him I guess but the only affection the world has for him is because an author chose to write a story about him glorifying his life.

Pretty much this. It's weird as fuck that so many people seem to have the impression that Krakaur tried to turn Chris into some kind of self-reliance hero. He didn't. The point of Into the Wild has always been to show that Chris was a very troubled kid who spent his adult life running away from people (because he was reacting to his terrible, abusive parents), only to realize right before dying that he was wrong. It's not a story about how Chris was a perfect symbol, it's a story about the value of relationships.

Yep. People act like McCandless did this all because society really is all that bad, and is infinitely inauthentic and the only healthy thing to do is leave it, but the fact is that McCandless spent his entire life pessimistically unwilling to accept even one sliver of authenticity if it had anything to do with society. He wouldn't let himself figure out how to enjoy music, how to tell or write his own stories, find love, understand friendship, or even open up and participate in the long going existentialist tradition. He brags that he sat there arms crossed his whole lifetime being deprived of happiness and authenticity because he was acted literally disgusted at the notion that it came from anyone besides himself.
People talk like the guy was Walt Whitman, but they forget that his entire philosophy revolved around disgust at everything you have not coming from yourself. He sincerely said he didn't like food that he didn't catch himself, or schooling that society gave him. The dude was ashamed that it takes a village to raise a man, and he felt that meant he wasn't himself. He didn't want to be free of distractions and petty trappings, he wanted a life where he didn't have to cope with the fact that human existence is cooperative and that he got help from people he hated.

But his life was a waste and the only reason we heard about him is because of the labor of career author and well adjusted onown-by-society outdoorsman John Krakauer. He claimed he didn't care enough about inspiring society to do so.

Or maybe he could have had a little faith in people. tried more than absolutely not at all, and do anything with all the power society was trying to give him?
You anti-productive types are the worst, always telling yourself stories about imprisonment in isocubes.

>Just consider this, a 20 years old woman making lots of money completly without any talent or business skill by being sexy after she changed her face, butt and tits to look like a bimbo and forming a "brand" based on her fathers and sisters name. Kylie jenner is the future of our society and if you dont see any problem with any of that, you clearly are just as stupid as the mass who follow her on social media.
literally nothing i can do about it. dropping out of a society with extremely diverse interests just because i don't like some people who are related to me by nationality seems way stupider than just dealing with the fact that i don't like everyone but there are a lot of people i do like and who like me.

Sure. The guy had every right to do as he wanted, though he was still a wounded incapable hater, and anyone who claims his life was 'the right thing to do' simply misread the book because they are too eager to hypocritical insult people who have more than zero affection for society at all.
>>
>>86903341
What misery life? He could do anything he wanted. Telling yourself stories about women who won't educate themselves doesn't change that.
>>

Why don't you go for a hike buddy
>>
>>86903021
completely agree
the movie emphasizes all the opportunities he misses to be authentic in his life
>being with a girl he loves
>having an honest hard-working job with authentic people
>taking care of an older man who is much wiser than him
he rejects all of this in pursuit of his idiotic illusion of realization. In a way the movie feels much like "anti coming of age" movie; he travels in search of meaning and answers, and he keeps getting answers but remains too retarded to get them

>one day all of you kids will rethink your life and for most of you it will be to late.
You can rethink your life forever but at some point you have to sort of accept it for what it is and make the best of it.

>managed to get far enough away from a camp filled with water to die of heat exposure and thirst

For fucks sake.
>>
>>86903464
Yes you can do something about it, by simply not allowing it to be a part of your life but since you cant really do that anymore you have to find another way to break free from all that shit over your head. Dont you feel like everything has become some sort of an ad for something you clearly dont need and that has been impregnated in you to believe that you have any interest for that shit. This may not happen to you, but for most people this has become reality. Just look at how fucking overweight america is and how retarted television has become. We are not improving in terms of character development and most people cant even think without a biased "science" source.

There is so much wrong with our society that simply the thought of living without it seems impossible to us. We rely on so much but we are also getting blinded daily by those with profit in their eyes. Humans are becoming weaker and dumber for the last 50 years and if you just let it happen and ignore it, this will also happen to your children.

Havent you seen the movie? He would be just like his parents become another consumer who buys shit he clearly does not need. He would just like anyone else end up being unhappy because he would try his hardest to fill up a hole within himself with stuffing shit into it.

In the end he would have a misery life because most of us end up extremly unhappy and unfulfilled.
>>
>>86904043
you are clearly lacking perspective and historical context
what you are referring to is the post-post-war predicament, when a privileged society, completely free of worries when it comes to the basic needs, starts to settle and implode in on itself
this can only be solved with struggle, not with the meme enlightenment you think you have right now. We've all been through what you're describing though
>>
>>86904043
Nobody thinks it's impossible to live without society. It's true that most of us are born into society whether we like it or not but I think you're forgetting how much freedom and how many options you have within society.
Also I think you're selling short the impact of your own beliefs and actions. You obviously string ideas and a serious relationship with this stuff, would your sense of authenticity be best served if you took a hike and died? Or would you do so much more good for people if you stayed with and helped each of the people you care about through these troubling times? Society is made of people, people like you and me. I know it seems hard and so impossible but you are making a stand, and you are making a difference. As you continue to grow more every day and make yourself a more complete person you will find increasing power and understanding to be what is good for this society.
My advice is find a job that's busy enough where people have to talk about work and their lives instead of social media. It sounds like you're frustrated by media the most, I assure you media is very weak, people find television disgusting. Just look who the president is, obviously media doesn't control public opinion after all.

>you obviously have strong ideas*
Forgive my phoneposting

Anyways find the people you love and work with them to build the world as it should be for eachother. Don't believe your mind's enemies when they say they're so powerful you have to do something crazy to break free, because they're not.
>>
>>86904266
There is no point to consider "historical context" for this discussion.

>can only be solved with struggle

you are not very bright.

And to make sure you understand where i come from.. I was born in a shithole in the ukraine, a city right next to russia. My childhood consisted mostly of fighting and making sure we had some food on the table. Nothing of this made our family any happier.

The point people always make about poor people being much happier than the rich, is so wrong. Family is the reason for any long happiness and if you've been REALLY poor yourself you see that you dont have any needs to buy that special protein powder to hit your daily self prescribed macro needs.

haha yeah. makes a difference.

what if I simply dont like other people and their closeminded behaviour? What if all that i really want is to live a simple life outside of a big city and what if I want to use my youth to travel the world to gain a better perspective of it?

Why does everyone tell me that I need to have a job and a house and a wife and super car to make people jealous? Pls dont tell me that you never heard anyone saying that to you.
>>
>>86893072
A fucking dumb ass dude. Nature wants to kill you thats why we made houses and towns.

you don't have to do any of those things for status anon.
>what if I simply dont like other people and their closeminded behaviour?
i think you're being closed minded desu.
>>
>>86904619
you clearly missed the point
the "struggle" is not an individual struggle, it's a civilizational one
you clearly missed the point because you said
>There is no point to consider "historical context" for this discussion.

when in reality this crisis you're crying about has been literally happening since the dawn of men
you're in no position to stop it now, you just can't
only a real struggle like national starvation or a war crisis can change a nation; as it stands degeneracy and self-implosing will continue to be the trends

I'll say it again, read some books and you'll find out exactly why this is happening today
>>
>>86893072
Just another middle class retard who thought he was invincible.
>>
>>86905012
I dont want to stop it, i want to be free of it myself, thats the reason I dont want to have an "ordinary" life like anyone else trying to archieve it.

I know about what you are talking about and I've also read some book on that matter even libido dominandi, I just can't agree with how you view it because it does not apply in any way to us today. I woudl rather say the struggle you are talking about has to be individual like living on less excess.
>>
>>86904264
He doesn't have to be that, though. The whole point is to be better each generation and try to succeed according to your own standards. Obviously he felt his idea of success couldn't have anything to do with society, but he was always completely ready to think the worst of any person he deemed a part of society, and would be set off by the most simple of behaviors, including being offered sympathy or an attempt at understanding. This guy pushed people away true friends who accepted him and wanted to know him better, just because he was insulted that he felt he was being pulled into society. He got to a point in his letters where he was projecting all his hatred of humanity into individuals who were sincerely trying to keep in touch and who loved him.
But he did him, that's for sure. Primitive isolationist dies helpless, it's expected. It's not a story worth telling without being a call for moderation and greater understanding. Again, it's a good thing a social successful winner, pioneer, inspirational speaker, and functional outdoorsman came along and told the story, so society could actually grow and learn about this subject, instead of swearing a lot and assuming nothing precious to him could be shared. I really liked the part where he kept saying he didn't give a fuck about anyone else, all the time.
>>
>>86904790
Sounds great. Tons of people do that. Do it smart though, you don't want to freeze to death after all.
>>
>>86905410
>it does not apply in any way to us today
that's because, again, you clearly aren't aware of society history
they were fucking in the streets in Weimar Germany, the Belle Epoque would call our current society prudish
then you look at 50's liberated Europe and you see a climate of post-war prosperity you'd probably would never believe could exist after such filth existed
traditional values and a healthy society can only be fostered
"living with less excess" as you put it is a meme because there's no forceful need to be moral and wholesome right now
>>
>>86904264
Let's face it. He didn't have any respect for his parents because they beat him, so he hated their lives and their money, so it felt like the freshest shit to him to perform the ultimate running away from home. All his talk was edgy high school fluff and delusions of grandeur. As if anyone can't write that manifesto.
