That was early in the show. Light wasn't doing his best effort to outsmart anyone because he didn't think there would be a genius countering him.
After that move, be basically upped his game by a dozen notches and starting thinking steps ahead instead of being reactionary.

In the movie, Light never showed any sign of actual forethought as a 'standard' way of thinking. Only when in actual stress he was able to come up with something.
