The point of Cypher was to show (although its harder to see as a positive in his case in any capacity) that people will give up due to the suffering in their life and opt out for a better deal if given the chance. Its unlikely that almost anyone would refuse the agents deal in the position of someone who is the equivalent of a faceless rebel mook eating shitty protein goup day and night in a gray airplane just so that your mentor can finally find the actual "chosen one" who isnt you. Would it be more "noble" to stick to his guns and keep fighting against the machines instead of submitting to a life of (technically false) happiness and ignorance? Obviously, but literally who gives a fuck. He represents the frailty of men. People who have lived long enough be apathetic are far more likely to "get" his actions rather than younger people who might still be idealistic
