This, so much this. People are dumb if they don't realize that revivals are doomed to mediocrity if they attempt to imitate what fans loved about the original. It's impossible, it can't be done, it will never be the same, it will never be anything but a poor imitation. The Return takes us back into that world, but greatly expands upon it and gives us new and great things, it is something that will stand on its own when looked at 10 years from now.

Will people look back on the x-files revival the same way in 10 years? as a worthwhile addition the the series? Fuck no they won't. It's true what you say, it has plenty of flaws, but so does anything that is taking risks nobody else is doing.

TR has earned its existence, it has a purpose that goes beyond revisiting the past. It will be remembered by fans as something that expanded and took the show into new exciting territory. I don't think we will ever see another revival like it, unless it has an auteur behind it like Lynch, given total and complete creative freedom.

Massive props to Showtime for doing this, they took a huge risk with it, and it may only pay off in the long term for them as the ratings haven't been the best. But they should seriously be commended for putting this out.

Twin Peaks took the story, the character, and expanded on it in a different direction. It resembles the old twin peaks enough without trying to ape the same exact formula.

I wouldn't have minded a tiny bit more of it, but so far I'm pretty happy with what we've gotten in terms of old themes, they're sparse enough that you actually appreciate the throwback when you do hear them.

What I am kind of unhappy about and would consider a flaw of TR is the new Badalamenti material not living up to the past, I thought Fire Walk With Me blew the original show out of the water, that soundtrack was way better, it had an incredible main theme, and everything else was just as good. I wish FWWM had more of that, I wish it had a brand new intro theme song, it feels weird that it is the old one again.

The music Badalamenti has written for season 3 has been pretty good, especially "Heartbreaking" but none of it comes close to what he did on FWWM.

>There is a rerun of part 15 on HBO Europe right now, my second viewing. Unlike most of the previous parts, I could not bear complete it, I am typing this as it is on and I am not watching. This is really bad, I cannot even watch it twice. I am honestly never going to watch this crap again once it is off the air. Yes, I still like the Mr C scene in this part with all its faults, but the rest is simply appalling. And they know it. They had the FBI Vegas guy yell "children" when he approached the interrogation room. The original had plenty of flaws, yes, even before the killer reveal, some of those early season 2 episodes not directed by Lynch are fucking ROUGH. Episode 4 in particular is a pretty fucking terrible episode.Episode 3 isn't much better. At least 6 was amazing for not being a Lynch directed episode, and 5 had plenty of highlights too. While I love the soapy nature of the original, the romance melodrama can be overbearing at times, especially in season 2. While I absolutely love the music in the original, they do lean a little too much on it, every fucking scene has it playing and not every director use it to the same brilliant effect that Lynch was able to in the scenes he wrote and directed.

The FWWM soundtrack is god-tier, but I kind of like The Returns' absence of a sound track. Take the scene with Jeffries, for example. All it has in the background is a whooshing sound played backwards, and an electrical hum, yet it's incredibly satisfying to watch and listen to. Dean Hurley has done an amazing job with the ambient sound effects in this season. If you're not watching this show with the volume cranked right up, you might complain that there isn't a soundtrack, but there is, albeit a more subtle, constant one.

Better believe, I am boi, AMZN rips with the 6ch sound at 75% volume. I love it as well, they've done a great job, I'd still like a little more new music though, not anything close to the original show but just some more of that.

As great as the sound design is in it, I think FWWM outdoes it, it has some fucking incredible sounds in it. Like that MIKE scene when they're stuck waiting for the old man to cross the street, that is a great blend of fucked up discordant music created by Badalamenti and various layered ambient hums and buzzing playing over it, it's so disorienting and disturbing, really puts you in the mindspace of the mental hell that Laura must have been going through.

I also love what they did with the Red Room in the movie, it has this reverberated wind sound, it's as if you're in an empty tunnel with air passing through it, it gave the setting an even more ethereal feeling.

Speaking of which, the full deleted scene of the Convenience Store also has mindblowing sound design. I'd say to date, in Lynch's entire filmography the best use of that electrical humming

It feels a little rocky jumping around in time like that while still seemingly progressing on storylines we've assumed are playing parallel to others, like Diane getting a text from Mr. C asking about Vegas, then 3 episodes later we see him send that text (which speaking of inconsistencies, isn't written the same way)

More blaring ones would be Dougie Jones playing catch with Sunny Jim, that scene would have fit into any previous episode better than this one, they put it into the worst time imaginable.

inconsistencies in tone and pacing, what I mean there are episodes like Part 6 where there's no throughline to anything happening on screen, you have Dougie's story continuing but then you have a huge chunk of the episode taking up time on this razor focused Richard/Carl intercut event, which then goes absolutely nowhere. It feels disjointed and not much like an episode so much as vignettes put into an hour of television.

Compare how Part 6 to how 11 handled similar diverging stories. That episode is a masterpiece, even though it has 3 diverging storylines going on, they all feel like they share a common tone and pathos. Imagine if instead of having Part 6 be the mess that it was, have it be more centralized on Richard and the Mitchum Brothers, like blending Part 6 with Part 10, now that could have made for a fucking good hour of tv.

I've been saying this for a while now, but the Eddie Vedder song seems like a perfect fit for what she is going through.

We know from an interview with the actor that plays James that Eddie Vedder does actually play the roadhouse and isn't just a featured song, so it wouldn't make much sense to apply to to Dougie Jones since he's not there. All Audrey is talking about is going to the roadhouse so naturally when she does, hearing this song will be a somber reminder of her state of mind.

All the books have inconsistencied with the show; the dates in the secret diary of Laura Palmer don't match up with fwwm and Bobby kills a man for the first time in two different occasions in the book and in fwwm. Cooper's tapes have a completely different account of Teresa Banks murder. I haven't read a guide to the town though so that one may be all right.
The new show hints at the fact that inconsistencies are part of the storyline, but still I think Frost was just being lazy with the latest book. He probably got that line from Norma about not having any family, and made up something about her family dying in the book forgetting all backstory from the original show

Over the last month, between Twin Peaks episodes, I rewatch all of Lynch's main movies (excluding Dune and The Strait Story). There were few surprises; other than enjoying Lost Highway more than I thought I would.

The question I pose to you is which of his movies besides the two excluded do you like the least? For me it's easily wild at heart. That's not to say that I don't find parts of it great it just doesn't hold together at all for me.
