Since we're about to enter the final stretch, what do you consider the themes of season 3 so far?

All I noticed is how messed up all the young adults are, and how children keep witnessing shit that they are too young to comprehend. Like methfu's son and the exploding car, the Twin Peaks boy discovering the battered fat woman at the roadside, the prison warden's son finding his body... I wonder if Sonny-E will end up having a similar experience.

Also I find it interesting how the original series was about a murderous father, while this time the mother seems to be the big bad. Any thoughts?

And if I stayed long enough to hear what they were saying, they would be talking about NOTHING. I figured out that I couldn't follow the plot, (or had to make one up) because there WAS NO PLOT. A man went to a town to investigate a murder. That's it. Nothing else ever happens. Just people talking in rooms. And all this taking NEVER advanced the murder investigation ONE BIT. I liked the part that I was in, (because I was in it), but it still didn't make a hoot of sense. Hard to watch.

well, for Twin Peaks the town it seems to be hanging on to the past, which is I guess a sort of meta message to the audience as well. But overall the big theme has been family and their ties and how they can be fucked up. Think all the references to the Mother, the messed up family structure of the Hornes, the woman who lost her kid, the 119 lady who completely ignores her child and so on. The og show didn't have really young kids so that was new for the Return. But I feel like Lynch is also trying to convey the meaning of patience - don't get upset if the scene takes it's time, learn to enjoy it. It's very notable how DougieCoop has been the main version of Cooper we've seen, I don't think even the doppelganger has that much screentime. Doppelcoop could take us forward with the plot, but Lynch is building up Dougie's life and showing us that, making us like him, showing us what Cooper could've had and why Lynch didn't take the easy way and just have him pop out of the Lodge asking for coffee.

Rambling thoughts, but just a few ideas I've had based on what I've seen.

Mad Men is obviously completely different but much like the Return I felt that each episode offered me something artistically and was thematically rich. To the extent where people can change my mind about what episodes were trying to say, years later.

The Return is the same. These days with 'event' shows like GoT that are more comparable to summer blockbusters, everyone is obsessed with who died last week, what's going to happen between x and y next week, etc. Whereas a show like The Return is completely uninterested in giving anyone narrative satisfaction. It's very meditative and spiritual in a way I don't think other shows are.

I thought tv was dead after Mad Men, but The Return has given me a glimmer of hope.
