Everyone is improved in this except for Light & his Dad

Mia (Misa) is actually a foil for Light now & tires to fuck him over, in the anime & manga shes just a useless moe blob with empty threats

L actually gets emotional & shows more of a human side to him, i get that it's in L's character to be clam & collected at all times, but it's nice to see him lose his shit for once

Ryuk isn't just an observer this time, he fucks around with Light & pushes him to the edge, this is way more interesting than any other version of Ryuk

I think this would have been 10x better as a TV series, they really had to rush & change a ton of stuff due to the 1 hour 30 min limit

I disagree because the changes fuck with the entire flow. The anime was so good because it was essentially a chess match, a proper battle of wits between L and Light.
I somewhat agree with L (some changes were for the better, but he seemed less believable and more cringey - I don't if it was the actor or the writing).

But making Mia a threat fucked with the dynamic. She was much more interesting as a pawn that Light controlled that L tried to use to his advantage

And Ryuk was great as comic relief - it felt like he was the only one Light really trusted in the anime. Here you were trying to figure out if he was a threat. But Dafoe nailed it regardless

Then of course they needed to have a big hollywood scene with the ferris wheel. Fuck me man this is insane. I feel sequel baited out of the ass and I actually want them to try. First, when Light had a hard time writing down a name in the Death Note during hoemcoming I thought it was his dad but it was shown to be Misa, but I think that was on purpose as it's possible he wanted his dad to find out he was Kira before killing him which he probably wrote in the Death Note while he was in the computer lab during homecoming. I think L is dead, but unlike Light's father theory I just proposed I don't remember a detail which could help this one out.

Mia was good in how she seemed to show some human greed and selfishness, and it all kinda worked but some of the execution was weird. Ryuk literally tasks Light with becoming Kira. He specifically chooses Light. He convinces him to try the Death Note. Keeps egging him on to use it more, and so on.

The original Ryuk couldn't give two shits about who got the Death Note or what they did with it. It wasn't until Light told him about his plan that he started getting mildly interested in how things would proceed. All he cared for was seeing what a human would do with the note left to their own devices, schadenfreude and apples.
