The adaption is Death Note and Death Note: The Last Name.

It has a semi-sequel called L: Change the World which is L trying to solve as many cases as he can before the date he's going to die on.

As of last year there's now a fourth movie called Death Note: Light up the NEW World which takes place ten years after and is effectively a story of what happens when more Death Notes fall into a world that knows about them and how different people think Kira and L should be succeeded, and it's the best thing to ever come out of the brand.

How can anyone say that this is worth it's weight in budgeting? Death Note(Grips), along with Cowboy Bebop. Eureka 7, FLCL, Inuyasha, were fucking tent-poles for Saturday night Adult Swim. It has to be one of the most replicated japanese animated series in other forms of media. Quality control must be a non-issue when it comes to established series branches because they will ultimately make money from subscriptions either way.

I think that this sort of shovelware series is an effort to bloat the catalog of shows in an attempt to disguise the fact that more and more production companies, whose intellectual properties make up a substantial viewer percentage of anything on netflix(NBC.AMC,etc.) are jumping ship to make their own version of a streaming website or are being shopped by giants like Amazon. I don't think Netflix will last long if their only product is series after series of funded pieces of trash. The Death Note live action could have easily, EASILY, been a fucking home run, especially considering all of the Japanese live action renditions have been wildly popular in Japan and also to western audiences so how do you botch something like this?

I can't wait until Netflix buys up all of the series that are constantly re-watched on Netflix from their original networks and turns them into garbage. Who wants another season of Futurama, 30 Rock, Malcolm in the Middle, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Friends, etc.

But that is also one of the things that made Death Note unique. There was no obvious good or bad guy in it.

Light was a murderer but made you question if he wasn't doing the right thing. Japan was almost completely free of crime at Kira's peak, and those who didn't do anything wrong didn't have anything to fear.

L on the other hand went way beyond what was or should be legal by the police (kidnap, unlawful restraint, psychological torture etc.), showing that the authorities you put your trust in aren't that great either.

My point is that it feels lost on this remake.

One of the fun parts of Death Notes was that it was (in lack of better words) edgy. It made you question if you'd do the same if you were in the character's shoes, and how far you'd be willing to go and where you'd stop and why. And the fact that they were both so distant from personal feeling made it that much more fun to see them push the other further and further.

And I might be wrong, but as I said I don't think we'll get that from this movie.
