I'm always surprised when people don't like this. I read the comic, and while I'm not a huge fan, I enjoyed it. The show might not be faithful to the plot, but tonally, it's pretty spot on, they nailed the sense of humor.
As far as adaptations that deviate from their source, this could have been much worse, I mean just look at American Gods.
