I had an Indian guy tell me once that the reason their films are so long is that because of the rampant poverty films need to feel like an "event" something worth the time/money of making the effort. So something 3 hours + becomes the norm.

That said, you sort of feel the same thing happening in the western world do you not? Most blockbusters now run into the 2hrs 30+ mark all the time. One might think that due to people going to the movies less and less each year now as opposed to prior generations, Hollywood has sought fit to Bollywoodise it's own industry
