Why capture a wight in the first place? Jon already had Dany's trust by this point. The North already has dozens of witnesses to Wights and White Walkers. Cersei wouldn't give a shit no matter what evidence they gave her. So what's the point?
Plot
prove to Cersei (but then she already knows about bringing back the dead thanks to Qyburn)

>So what's the point?
Prove the existence of the undead threat to Jaimie so that he will lead the Lannister armies against them, which is exactly what he's going to do, despite Cersei telling him not to.

Real answer is so the writers can give the NK a dragon
Story answer... Take your pick but little makes sense.
They have turned Tyrion from the smartest man in the show to a guy that thinks his meglo sister will help the woman trying to take her crown if they show her an ice zombie
The only thing that can redeem his character now is if we find out he's working against Dany for some reason

But they don't know that.

they needed an incredibly dumb excuse to have a big battle scene in the second to last episode
>before they came up with the plan, Varys starts to say "the wall has kept them out for thousands of years" but autistijon interrupts him and goes "I have to go home, the war is coming"
THE WALL EXISTS FOR A REASON. THERE'S NOTHING TO SUGGESTS THAT IT HAS LOST ITS POWER TO STOP THE WALKERS.
Except now they have a fucking dragon to go over it or even burn it down. Nice job.

The walkers marching on the wall suggests they know something that the humans don't.
They have been behind the wall for thousands of years, so there is obviously a reason they are heading there now with an army.

Except they moved maybe 3 miles in 2 years, so "marching on the wall" is an exaggeration. Maybe they just like to hang out in big groups.
