What's with that heavenly chanting at the beginning of The Simpsons intro? And why does it start in the clouds?? Is Springfield in the afterlife???

The title sequence is quite integral to the scene it paints of the town. The Simpsons was made at a time when sitcoms exclusively showed the middle class suburban dream.
In the opening sequence, and the angelic noise at the start, Springfield is shown to be a utopian community, but as soon as we see the Simpsons in the sequence, with Bart in detention, Lisa being a strong independent musician etc we can see that there is no conformity in this town with this family.
Just helps to reinforce the idea that this family disturbed the balance in Middle America
