You should listen to the first two episodes of the A New Hope radio drama. The radio adaptation shows Leia going on diplomatic mercy missions to aid the Rebellion and using her credentials to get past Vader and other Imperials. It shows how they learned about the Death Star project and the end of the heist (the Tantive IV intercepting the stolen plans), and the start of the chase. It dovetails perfectly into the first scenes of Episode IV.

Unlike the prologue of RO, after the events of the Radio Drama, it makes perfect sense for Leia to try a bluff.

Because the storytelling style is a blatant yet good rip-off of Kurosawa, and the visual design of the film was genuinely visionary. Everything from the art direction, set design, and special effects created a world beyond what people could imagine. The action in Star Wars is edited so well it should blow your fucking mind; especially the death star battle. There was nothing for that to draw inspiration from. They had to make a three dimensional star fighter space battle make sense and be engaging both viscerally and emotionally and it worked. There was nothing clunky or broken about it; they invented new technological methods of cinematic presentation.

By culturally enriched I mean that the mythos of Star Wars began to take on its own identity, also rooted in the mythos of the Western canon. When you listen to George Lucas talk about Yoda or the force back then you will know what I'm talking about. The maturity factor comes in the way that the first film has pretty much nothing but quirky one liners and corny stuff once the action gets going. Just compare even the opening scenes of ESB with Han, Leia, and Luke to any scene with the three of them in ANH. There is much more of a sense of realism and definition to their characters. It's magnificent.

First Order is a government that is part of a treaty with the New Republic. The Senate pussied out on finishing the war and settled for peace. The Senate then funds the Resistance to fight the First Order since the FO is building up military force beyond what the treaty allows.

TFA actually explains this in Hux's speech in a couple lines. The actual treaty thing is left out because the prequels soured everyone on political exposition.

Apart from the fact that after the prequels the Republic essentially *is* the Empire. The merchandise goes some way towards explaining the backstory but for anyone with a recollection of I-VI and half a brain The Force Awakens is a very flimsy piece of work in isolation.
