Why does he have so little hair in the first season compared

I remember reading the hair was a deliberate look, in an attempt to make him look less attractive / sleazier. Later, they opted to differentiate his character from his UK equivalent by making him more endearing to viewers, and they let up on making his hair look artificially thinner.
