That's a way of missing the whole point of Finn's character. He is a spineless coward who hides behind greater ideals and lies his ass off just to get away with his shit. This is played quite consistently through the movie, with his character arc showing that he is in fact redeemable and CAN grow a spine in the right environment.

This was put up against Rey, who was a purely heroic character who turned out to be quite susceptible to not-so-heroic stuff.

Characters in the movie are paired up by the way. We have the "Subtle Characters" of Finn and Rey, who actually have some depth. We also have the "Straight Characters" of Poe and Ben who are meant to be taken at face value (true hero and autist "villain", respectively). The movie plays around with these characters nicely, we have all the combinations and interactions we should have, the problem is everything else and the legacy shit.

Also I feel sorry for Boyega. That goddamn cameraman always found the worst angle for his face.
