So one thing always bothered me about the universal translater on DS9:

What does it sound like to Kira, if Sisko is using Bajoran words or reading ancient texts in old Bajoran dialects? So, the translator translates human English to Bajoran, so then if he reads things in Bajoran, is it funneled through English first, then Bajoran?

If nobody knows what I'm saying here, I'm talking about the times we hear Kira switch from English to the sacred texts of old Bajoran prayers...which are in native Bajoran. But Sisko hears them in ancient Bajoran...not English.

My head-canon is, that it just doesn't translate idiosyncracies particular to the language. Qapla has no real translation in english, because it is unique to klingon culture (like in Darmok). A different example would be using the word Schadenfreude in english, since there is no direct translation

So they claim, but what evidence do we really have of that? Saibok suffering from mental illness, a few cases of weird space phenomena, viruses or mind control that make them act strange. I always thought of Spock saying he considers Kirk a friend to be like when a human said they thought Worf was 'honorable': yeah, we have a similar concept that it fits the definition of, but it's more than a word, it has a cultural significance that isn't grasped properly by aliens and based on what we know of their nature, I suspect Vulcan friendships don't mean as much as human friendships, either because they're suppressing it or they genuinely don't feel it, as they're attempting to.

Take Tuvok for example, the time he gets a letter from his family for the first time in years, Neelix has to constantly bug him to listen to it rather than doing busywork on the ship, it genuinely isn't a priority for him, and that's his wife and children, does Spock really feel more for Kirk than Tuvok does for his family? I don't know, but it would seem weird to me if he did.
