Kirk's depth is singular which makes people think he's shallow. Thing is, that singular feature makes him the best character ST ever shit out. Kirk is love for man and man's possibilities. His friendships are his core. He doesn't love his ship, he loves what the Enterprise lets him accomplish. Anything that stands in the way of Kirk making man better, know more, prove more, is just fluff he can't deal with.

He is the best of our ideals and when the flaws show they are magnified, showing us all that man is imperfect.

Picard is just a traditional stiff lipped military man with a slightly better brain. By the end he is becoming young Kirk because it took his whole life to reach even that. Kirk sought the adventure of the unknown. Picard was only a dressed up yes man out there showing everyone the Federation could do whatever it wanted.
