It's a shitty movie, definitely the worst Coen bros. flick I've seen. They just threw a bunch of ideas and symbolsim at the wall (sometimes literally) to see what would stick. If you're looking for some cohesive narrative or thematic structure that will be able to tie all of that nonsense together, you'll be looking for a long time.

I really didn't understand this movie, am I a pleb?

It's a film about a struggling intellectual screenwriter who ends up really confused and at a total loose end. Supposedly the Coens wrote it in a couple of weeks to freshen their minds up while they were getting writers block working on Miller's Crossing which is a really complex movie.
Fink is pretty much a bunch of nonsense and random ideas but also a meta commentary on how absurd film structure and plots get and poking a bit of fun at themselves for thinking they know it all because they're "intellectuals"

It's been a while but, Barton fink is elitist intellectual pretentious goy. John Goodman is a blue collar guy. Barton is looking for his next movie script. Thinks hes writing it for the every man. John Goodman keeps offering him anecdotes. Barton talks over him. Goodman sneezes (anyone has any bodily function) Barton is repulsed. He isn't an every man he is a goy in hollywood. He will never succeed in this venture because he doesn't/doesn't WANT to understand the everyman. Also he takes offence at everything cause he thinks everyone is out to get him because hes jewish. So anyway hes a jew and shit and WW2 is going on all around him and he is blind to this as well. Some guy gets promoted and is shipping off to war and Barton is all, "Muh magnum opus boxing movie with no fight scenes... Hey why are you dressed as a soldier?" "Don't you know theres a war on?" A war about the everyman struggle. About jewish stuggle. Barton is a dumb bastard, Goodman tried to help him. Movie then descends into surreal punishment mode for Barton. Barton fails, "Barton Fink" ends up being a pretentious jewy story that also fails to connect.

Barton is a bit of an unreliable narrator and has a stress related psychotic break about halfway through the film. same thing that happens in Videodrome
